Biopics on the life of famous sportspersons are slowly becoming every Bollywood filmmaker’s favorite genre. And why not? After all, one of the highest grossing Hindi films is Dangal, which showcased the journey of the Olympic medal winners, Geeta and Babita Phogat. Now the first sports-based biopic of 2018 will be releasing next Friday. Soorma, which stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, is based on the life of hockey player Sandeep Singh.

Dosanjh was always the first choice for the role and he trained very hard to look the part. Taapsee Pannu’s character is someone who was instrumental in motivating Singh to achieve his goals. The role of Sandeep Singh’s elder brother, Bikramjeet, is played by Angad Bedi. While most parts of Soorma have been shot in North India, especially Chandigarh and Haryana, the last schedule was in Belgrade, Serbia. Singh’s career had its share of ups and downs but he made a sensational comeback after a serious injury. He captained the Indian hockey team to multiple victories, one of which includes a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Soorma is directed by Shaad Ali, whose biggest hit till date is the 2002 Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji-starrer, Saathiya. Ali’s last movie was OK Jaanu, which was a semi-hit. The director definitely has a lot of pressure to deliver a blockbuster and going by the Soorma trailer, it looks like he will finally strike gold. Soorma will hit theatres on July 13, 2018.
