The Movies

This year was quite unique from any other year in Bollywood. From the very beginning, the focus shifted to content-rich movies, not only by the makers but also from the audience. Massive movies like Thugs of Hindostan, Race 3, Namaste England, Fanney Khan or Loveyatri didn’t do well on the box office regardless of the force behind them while Stree, Andhadhun, Raazi, Badhaai Ho, and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety did exceedingly well in terms of the moolah as well as critical appreciation. The top five have been listed here:

1. Badhaai Ho – 136.80 cr

2. Stree – 129.67 cr

3. Raazi – 123.17 cr

4. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety – 108.71 cr

5. Andhadhun – 72.50 cr

The Crores

Like every year, this year also had a lot of movies raking in the money at the box office. What’s wonderful is that many of the entries truly deserved it! Some of the notable box office collections are as follows:

1. Sanju (June 2018) – 341.22 cr

2. Padmaavat (Jan 2018) – 300.00 cr

3. Baaghi 2 (March 2018) – 165.00 cr

4. Thugs of Hindostan (November 2018) – 145.29 cr

5. Badhaai Ho (October 2018) – 136.80 cr

The Khans

Bollywood is ruled by the three Khans – Salman, Shah Rukh & Aamir. Releases from all three heroes are always extremely hyped and open to houseful shows. This year, we already have releases by both Salman & Aamir viz. Race 3 & Thugs of Hindostan. While Race 3 performed average at the box office, Thugs of Hindostan was a massive flop. Shah Rukh Khan, however, has a highly anticipated upcoming release, Zero, and everyone’s looking forward for it to become the comeback of the quintessential SRK.

The Debuts

Each year, the Bollywood family expands and we have new talent coming in to keep us entertained. 2018 wasn’t so different either. We had some of the most amazing and awaited debuts this year, who not only impressed us but also won themselves a space in our hearts. Some of the best debutants are:

1. Sara Ali Khan (Kedarnath)

The Controversies

Bollywood and controversies go hand in hand. Like every year, there were a lot of gossips that made rounds in the news and some of them even landed at the court. Without stretching much, here are few of them that gained the most amount of coverage:

1. Padmaavat release:

The SLB’s magnum opus invited a lot of allegations and petitions but emerged a winner. There were bounties on beheading Deepika and security threats to all the actors and crew by political groups. However, the same also started promoting the movie after watching it.

2. Tanushree – Nana #metoo:

The entire nation was in shock when Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of sexual harassment. Both the actors have taken legal routes now and the verdict is still not out. However, this action revolutionalized the #MeToo movement in the industry and for good.

3. Death threats to Salman Khan:

The year started great for Salman Khan until he received a death threat from one the most notorious gangsters, Lawrence Bishnoi. Bishnoi belongs to the same community that took Salman to court for the Black Buck poaching case.

4. PC stepping out of Bharat:

Bharat has been in the news since its announcement, mostly because of the cast. Priyanka Chopra, who was to play the leading lady of the movie, walked out after signing for it, which left Bhai a little miffed. There was a cryptic tweet by the director that hinted towards the wedding as the reason for her opting out.

5. Allegations of plagiarism against Pad Man:

After its release, Pad Man received great reviews and was reigning the box office. But between all this, a legal trouble came in the way when Ripu Daman Jaiswal accused the movie to have plagiarised his draft that he sent to Dharma Productions earlier. The claims were refuted by the director R. Balki.

Well, this brings us to the end of this year. With a hope that the next year will bring us more entertainment, talent, and movies, we bid adieu to 2018.

Have a happy new year guys!
