Black comedies in Bollywood are rare, but every once in a while, one comes along, giving us a new genre of cinema we have enjoyed watching over the years. In the last decade, black comedy movies like Delhi BellyJolly LLBNewtonLipstick Under My Burkha, and 7 Khoon Maaf have become cult classics. And now, from the writer of Delhi Belly, comes another movie we hope joins the league of the aforementioned films. Kalakaandi – starring Saif Ali Khan – comes to theatres on January 12, and is the perfect movie to start the New Year with.

The story of Kalakaandi does not seem very original. The lead character (played by Saif) learns that he has stomach cancer and his impending death leads him to live the remainder of his life in glory. The simple non-alcoholic non-smoking guy turns to partying and drugs, but his short life certainly has much in store for him. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of other characters in the movie – Kunaal Roy Kapur and Sobhita Dhulipala, who play a much-in-love couple up to no good; playboy Akshay Oberoi, who plays Saif’s younger brother; Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz, who cook up a plan to make a lot of illegal money; and more. The movie explores several of the seven deadly sins as the whole cast comes together over a plan gone wrong.

The poster of Kalakaandi was revealed earlier last month and it shows Saif Ali Khan in a whole new avatar. Comedy has been Saif’s strongest suit and we can’t wait to see how the actor impresses this time. The other characters may not have made an impression in the trailer, but are surely going to bring a lot more to the table. The music, by Sameer Uddin and Shashwat Sachdev with lyrics by Anvita Dutt and Akshay Verma, also has us hooked.
