‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai‘ was all about love, drama, and more dramatic love. But we loved the movie back then and don’t think we’re getting tired of it anytime soon.
Karan Johar‘s story was originally supposed to be a love triangle between a tomboy, a pretty girl, and a slightly insensitive boy. Later, he went on to write another story about a widower and a child. He ended up merging the two stories et voila!
So Karan Johar spoke about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in October last year. Here’s what he said:
“Actually, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is a very unusually silly theme. Don’t know what the mother wrote in those eight letters, how can a eight-year-old read that?
But it was done with so much conviction, a mother has left eight letters, but kya likha hoga pehli, dusri chhitti may ki woh bachcha padh sake?”
He had this to say about Rahul played by Shah Rukh Khan:
“He (the hero) says, ‘Zindagi may pyaar ek bar hota hai, shaadi ek bar hoti hai’, but he himself has fallen in love twice, got married twice. Everything was wrong, but it was written with so much conviction that it made sense,
He went on to add what Shabana Azmi had to say about the film:
“Once Shabana (Azmi) ji called me after watching the film and said, ‘What is this, when she was not beautiful, love didn’t happen, but the moment she turned beautiful, wore saree, grew long hair, love happened?
What do you want to say?
I just said ‘Sorry. I have no justification’.”
Well, everything said and done, this film has been a part of all the 90’s kids memories. We all dance to ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, we all went to the basketball court to play and call someone a cheater at least once! And we all said ‘Tussi jaa rahe ho, tussi na jao’ for someone we loved.
Thanks for the memories, Karan.
