A warrior. A mother. A queen. Rani Laxmibai remains one of the most inspirational Indian women even to this day. When the British East India Company threatened to seize Jhansi, the fearless and feisty woman beat all odds to stop it from happening. Now, in the season of Bollywood biopics, her powerful tale of courage and valor is making its way to the big screen with Manikarnika.
The film follows the journey of how a simple girl named Manikarnika or Manu, as her family liked to call her, became a fierce nationalist queen when her home of Jhansi was threatened to be taken over. Actress Kangana Ranaut will be seen stepping into the titular role, promising an empowering and inspiring biopic. At first, filmmaker Krish stepped in as the director but when he had to leave the film due to prior commitments, Kangana took over the task. It seems like the film was in good hands with Ranaut after she received shared directorial credits with Krish.
From the looks of the power-packed trailer, it seems like the film will be an extraordinary epic. It kicks off with shooting an arrow at a tiger with precision. Then begins the historic tale of how Manu takes on the name of Rani Laxmibai after her marriage to the king of Jhansi. When her husband dies, she meets with a challenge as the East India Company tries to take Jhansi under its control. Kangana puts on her armor, wields her sword, and climbs on her steed as Laxmibai when we’re officially introduced to the one and only Jhansi ki Rani.
The trailer also reveals the cast that will play other historic characters like Ankita Lokhande as Manu’s trusted lieutenant Jhalkaribai, Atul Kulkarni as Tatya Tope, and Danny Denzongpa as Ghulam Ghaus Khan.
The description of the trailer braces us for exactly what we can expect from the film, stating –
“She fought for freedom 160 years ago.
She fought with her head held high,
She fought till she dropped,
Yet, never gave up her pride, her motherland, her beloved, Jhansi!
It’s time to salute India’s greatest warrior queen!
Experience and relive the proudest chapter in our history.
Presenting the epitome of a warrior, a mother and a Queen.”
Produced by Zee Studios and Kamal Jain, Manikarnika is set to ride into cinemas screens on January 25. Stay tuned to this space for our review!
