One of the most anticipated movies this year and Bollywood’s latest biographical movie, Mission Mangal will explore a landmark moment in Indian history. The film will explore the real-life story of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Mars Orbiter Mission while celebrating the power of the women scientists that worked on the project. Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead as one of the scientists along with a power-packed female lead cast, the film is all set to make India proud with a 15th August release date.

ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), which was also called Mangalyaan, was launched in 2013. Successfully executing a Mars mission in its first attempt, this mission marked India’s first interplanetary expedition. It made ISRO the fourth space agency to reach Mars, after Roscosmos, NASA, and the European Space Agency while also being the first Asian nation to reach Martian orbit. In 2014, China referred to India’s successful mission as the “Pride of Asia”. The spacecraft is even featured on the ₹2,000 currency note of India. Recreating this landmark moment in India’s history on the big screen, Mission Mangal will tell the story from the perspective of the scientists that worked on the project, including the exemplary women behind the mission. Playing those characters on the big screen is the talented female lead cast of Sonakshi Sinha, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, and Kirti Kulhari along with Akshay Kumar and Sharman Joshi.

The film’s teaser gave us a look at how the film aims to show us the human side of the extraordinary achievement. Directed by Jagan Shakti, Mission Mangal will remind us of the important historical moment on the auspicious national holiday. Releasing on the Indian Independence Day, the film is touted to remind us that “the sky is not the limit”. Another reason why this release is auspicious is that it will also take place in the same year as the upcoming launch of India’s second lunar exploration mission – Chandrayaan 2.

Speaking of the importance of this film, actor Akshay Kumar stated, “For several years Hollywood has made movies and TV shows like Star Trek, Star Wars, Gravity, etc, this inspired an entire generation of inventors, scientists, and explorers. I have always wanted to be part of one such movie… A movie that inspires our future generations. One that celebrates imagination and curiosity. ‘Mission Mangal’ is that film for me, a film that I hope will inspire as much as it will entertain.” Akshay also announced the launch of the film’s trailer which has now been released with the following tweet featuring the film’s latest poster –
