2 States is just about a month shy of hitting the theaters and the buzz around the film has already started going berserk. Along with a fresh as a daisy lead pair (Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt), some peppy music and a reliable high on the hog production house at the helm (Dharma Productions), 2 States has a lot going in its favor, atleast so far.
In 2 States, Alia Bhatt dons the role of a Tamilian girl Ananya Swaminathan, who is conservative yet chirpy, while Arjun Kapoor essays the role of a suave Punjabi boy Krish Malhotra. Revathy, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam, Amrita Singh and Ronit Roy enact the role of the couple’s doting parents. Judging by the promos till now, the star cast appears totally in sync and seems to have had a whale of a time during the film’s outdoor shooting.
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name, the film is a story of two IIM-Ahmedabad graduates who are truly, madly, deeply in love with each other. However, their cultural differences create a rift in their blossoming love story, as the girl is a South Indian while the boy is a typical North Indian Punjabi.
The PR team created the initial buzz around the film with some carefully-designed posters which instantly struck a chord with the youngsters. Alia sent out a public invite to the "engagement ceremony" aka the "2 States" movie promo launch via Twitter. She also posted the card with a message: "I’m getting engaged”. It was the much-awaited official trailer of the film though, released on February 27 that actually created waves across tinsel town. With a run time of nearly three minutes, the trailer showcased some neat and subtle comic punches, and also had glimpses of the film turning out to be a sweet and coy romantic overdrive.
Two song promos have been released so far. ‘Offo’ sung by Aditi Sharma (of Dhoom: 3 title track fame) has a peppy and feel good vibe around it. It also reflects the natural chemistry of its lead pair. The other song ‘Locha-E-Ulfat’ , crooned by Benny Dayal, has quite engaging lyrics and is shot in the college premises. This song is more about Arjun aka Krish Malhotra being totally head over heels in love with Alia aka Ananya.
One of the major selling points of the film is the chemistry of its young lead pair – which appears as refreshing and delightful to the mind as cool water to parched lips, a welcome relief from all those trite and insipid romantic films with more or less a ubiquitous and conventional star cast. Both the protagonists here are young and vulnerable, yet they possess a certain disarming sense of aura around them; a raw keenness to prove to the audience that they are no one film wonders, and that intensity is indirectly reflecting in the movie’s promos.
It will be interesting to see what Alia Bhatt, who has made quite a transformation from a bimbette-like forgettable character in ‘Student of The Year’ to a praiseworthy and intense character in ‘Highway’, brings to the table in this film. This project is important for the Kapoor lad too, who’s last outing ‘Gunday’ didn’t exactly set the box office on fire.
2 States, directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Dharma Productions, will hit the screens on April 18.
