Popular Bollywood dance movies through the ages

A B C D – Any Body Can Dance.
That’s true. You, me and everyone else – we all can dance, if we want to. There’s no such thing as "two left feet" or "I can’t dance". And Bollywood has taught us just how. Over the years, the Hindi film industry has given us plenty of movies showcasing different aspects of dance. Admit it, at some point, we’ve all tried to imitate our favorite actors/actresses and their dance moves. In fact, dance as a genre has evolved in Bollywood through some timeless classics that became quite popular among their respective generations.
As Disney’s ABCD2 gears up for release this Friday, we take a look at some of the best dance movies that Bollywood gave us. Take a look:
1. Disco Dancer
A typical rags-to-riches story of a young singer-cum-dancer, Disco Dancer starred the dashing Mithun Chakraborty in the lead role. With music from the veteran Bappi Lahiri, Disco Dancer turned out to be a smashing hit in the ’80s. Known for its Disco songs like, "I am a disco dancer", "Jimmy Jimmy", the film received plenty of recognition across the world. Disco Dancer was one of the first films to have established Mithun as the ultimate dancer of the Hindi film industry. With shining silver outfits, Mithun became a brand in himself. Ever tried his signature pelvic thrusts? You should!
2. Naache Mayuri
Well-known classical dancer and actress Sudha Chandran starred in this classic 1987 dance biographical film. Naache Mayuri traces the journey of a passionate Bharatnatyam dancer who refuses to give up on dance, despite losing a leg in an accident. Her thirst for success eventually triumphs destiny. Incidentally, this is Chandran’s real life story that was later made into a Telugu and Hindi film. Naache Mayuri became one of the most influential films in Hindi cinema, inspiring many aspiring dancers. As for Sudha, she gained immense popularity as the "Mayuri" girl.
3. Dance Dance
You can take Mithun out of dance, but you cannot take dance out of Mithun. Five years after the worldwide success of Disco Dancer, Mithun returned with another dance blockbuster, Dance Dance. Starring Mithun, Smita Patil and Mandakini in lead roles, Dance Dance is a musical film based on two siblings and their dreams. The film’s music was heavily influenced by the Italo-Disco style of the ’80s. Once again, Bappi Da’s music and Mithun’s epic dance moves turned out to be the perfect recipe for success.
4. Dil Toh Pagal Hai
On one side, you had the vivacious Madhuri Dixit. On the other, you had the glamorous Karishma Kapoor. Add to it, the charm of SRK and the writing was on the wall. Dil Toh Pagal Hai was probably Yash Chopra’s finest offering, and why wouldn’t it be! DTPH was the perfect combination of old and new, showcasing two different styles of dancing. Needless to say, the film was a huge success. Who can forget the ‘Dance of Envy’?
5. Any Body Can Dance – ABCD
Choreographer Remo D’Souza directed this 2013 dance movie that took everyone by surprise. Featuring Prabhu Deva, Kay Kay Menon and Ganesh Acharya in the lead roles, ABCD was a step towards the modern-day dance style. The film also starred quite a few contestants from the reality show, Dance India Dance. Hollywood movie-watchers may find a shade of the Step Up series in this film, and rightly so. With ABCD, Remo tried to explore the Hip-Hop dance culture and he was tremendously successful in doing so, as the audience loved it. The film has some eye-popping dance moves that will stay with you even after it’s over.
With all the excitement around ABCD2, we can’t wait to go on another dance ride that will blow our minds away! Are you excited?
