The ending showed Nandini (Aishwarya) choosing her husband, Vanraj (Ajay) over her love, Sameer (Salman). Nandini’s conflict and Sameer’s heartbreak were brilliantly portrayed by the actors. Nandini chose duty over love and it shattered Sameer. You can’t imagine the movie any other way, can you?
Turns out, the movie could have had a happier ending at least for Sameer. Salman had suggested to Sanjay Leela Bhansali to give the story a happier end for his character, Sameer. He wanted Nandini to choose Sameer.
Interestingly, this was also the time when Salman and Aishwarya had just started dating. Could Salman’s professional suggestions be attributed to his personal desires?
Salman even told his director-friend Sooraj Barjatya to help convince Bhansali to change the ending.
According to a report in 2016, Sooraj spent a good 90 minutes convincing Bhansali as to why “prem” (love) should win over “kartavya” (duty).
But Sanjay Leela Bhansali didn’t want to change the ending and politely declined the suggestion.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali entered the industry with Khamoshi that starred Salman. On being asked whether he will work with his favorite actors, Aishwarya, Salman and Rani, he had this to say:
“A lot of people feel I am rude, arrogant, disinterested, but I love all the people I have worked with, be it Rani who loves me, and Aishwarya who I never need to say a word to and she’s there for me, with Salman I had that, but Salman is still upset about a few things — I don’t know what — but those moments are special.”
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam wouldn’t be as memorable without the heart-wrenching ending. What are your views on this? Let us know in the comments below.
