In 2007, Bollywood gave us Bhool Bhulaiyaa that had both laughing and scared. This was hardly the first horror comedy in the film industry but since then, we haven’t had many movies like this one in Hindi. Now, Amar Kaushik is set to bring back the charm of the genre with his upcoming movie, Stree. Co-produced by Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK, and Dinesh Vijan, under the banner of Maddock Films, Stree stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, with Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Vijay Raaz as the supporting cast.
Background and Story:
Based on an urban legend in Chanderi, the story of Stree is set in a town resplendent with rumors about a strange woman who appears at night. She is known to call men by their name and abduct them, leaving their clothes behind. It is not exactly revealed what happens to her victims but if they resurface, they have wild stories to tell about their experience, where their fear is palpable. To avoid her presence, the townsfolk inscribe the words ‘O Stree, Kal Aana’ (Oh woman, come tomorrow) on the exterior of their walls. No one steps out at night.
In the trailer of the film, we see a young lad called Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) who meets the love of his life (played by Shraddha Kapoor) in this town. But her past is sketchy and nobody knows who she is and where she came from. His friends suspect her to be Stree (the strange woman from the aforementioned rumor) and Vicky is now hesitant to pursue the relationship, even though he is in love. Is this the real Stree? And if so, what does Vicky’s fate hold for him? The story unravels in a comical manner with a few scary moments.
Stree is Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s first movie together. We have seen the actor work alongside Pankaj Tripathi – who plays an important role in the film – four times in the past (Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and Newton) but this is his first collaboration with director Amar Kaushik. Shraddha Kapoor is also working with this director and cast for the first time. It remains to see if the makers and cast of Stree do justice to this unique plot.
Apart from the main and supporting cast, Nora Fatehi and Kriti Sanon have small appearances in songs like Kamariya and Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe respectively. The music for the film has been composed by Sachin-Jigar with lyrics by Vayu and Guru Randhawa. Three songs have been released till date – the romantic number Nazar Na Lag Jaye, the dance number Milegi Milegi, and the item number Kamariya. Yes, it is a Bollywood movie through and through and you can watch all three videos below.
Stree is set to hit theatres on the 31st of August, 2018 alongside the comedy entertainer Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se. So mark your calendars because it is going to be a good week for Bollywood!
