Johnny Walker, Bollywood’s cherished comedian would always remain the benchmark for pulling off drunkard roles. But did you know, like many other actors to whom Bollywood happened by chance, this wasn’t his actual name?
Johnny Walker’s real name was Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi and before he became one of Bollywood’s finest comedians, Johnny was a bus conductor with BEST bus service. He would often be seen working at the Dadar bus depot, cracking fun fulled jokes with the passengers, and it was then that Balraj Sahni spotted him.
Sahni was writing for Guru Dutt that time and he introduced Walker to Dutt. Guru Dutt loved his portrayal of a drunkard with that trademark husky voice, and that is how Walker ended up playing the role of a drunkard, something that stayed his trademark performance throughout. It was after this, that he was given the name of Johnny Walker, after the popular whiskey brand.
It is amazing to note that Walker, despite playing a drunkard with such finesse, never ever touched alcohol his entire life. He was a devout Muslim and was starkly opposite to his on-screen personality.
Walker worked very closely with Guru Dutt, who penned down characters and roles that would fit best for him. However, things changed when Mehmood, another fine comedian, came to Bollywood and comedy found a new form in the film industry.
