Amidst all the Bollywood masala, there have been directors who have tried to produce content that will not just entertain but also give you a reality check alongside a strong social message.

1.    Halla Bol (2008)
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Halla Bol tried to touch upon relevant social issues based on real life events like the Jessica Lal Murder, Narmada Bachao Andolan and the need to fight against systemic corruption. Starring talented actors like Ajay DevgnVidya Balan and Pankaj Kapur, the film will give you goose bumps.

2.    3 Idiots (2009)
This Aamir Khan starrer movie needs no elaboration as it not just exposed the sad state of our education system but also gave an interesting mantra to live by – All Iz Well.

3.    Peepli Live (2010)
An Aamir Khan production and India’s official entry for the 83rd Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film Category, Peepli Live talks about one of India’s gravest social issues which are farmer suicides and the subsequent response the event gets from politicians and the media. It introduced a lot of people to farmer crisis India is facing since some years now.

4.    No One Killed Jessica (2011)
Based on the real life murder of Jessica Lal by a politician’s son, No One Killed Jessica is not just an eye opener but an experience in itself. It not only emphasizes the need to support the weak but also gives some gyaan about the right kind of journalism India desperately needs today.

5.    OMG (2012)
When it's about religion, you ought to be really careful with your opinions on it, especially in India. OMG starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar was a breath of fresh air as it balanced out the pros and cons of religion in a way that was loved by everyone.

6.    Jolly LLB (2013)
A black comedy, Jolly LLB ripped out the Indian legal system’s apathy towards the weak and tried to expose the dark reality of what goes on in a courtroom. Every citizen must watch this film at least once.

7.    Mardaani (2014)
Rani Mukherjee film all the way, Mardaani deals with the issue of human trafficking and child prostitution. The daredevil character of a police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy played by Rani Mukherjee was definitely the film’s strongest points.

8.    Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)
Salman Khan won many hearts with this one as the bhola bhala Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi. The film’s powerful message about love, compassion, and empathy touched everyone’s heart.

9.    Pink (2016)
We don’t need to explain what kind of social issue Pink touched upon. One of the best films of 2016, the powerful acting by the film’s lead cast including Amitabh Bachchan made everyone question our society’s deteriorating mindset about women.

10.    Hindi Medium (2017)
Hindi Medium depicts the invisible line that divides the urban rich and poor – those fluent in English and those who are not. The film plays upon the urban reality with a lot of situational comedy to keep the tone lighter but in the end, delivers a sharp social message.
