The teaser of Akshay Kumar‘s upcoming movie ‘Gold‘ came out recently and it is quite impressive. The movie marks the debut of television star Mouni Roy. The cast ensemble includes Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor. and Vineet Kumar Singh of Mukkabaaz fame.
Reports state that the movie is based on the first Olympic gold India won after Independence. 1948 Olympics were held right after World War II in London after a gap of 12 years. For a country which was struggling with the aftermath of the wrathful partition, this was a moment to celebrate.
Two Olympics were called off because of World War II. Ironically enough, the 1948 Olympics were hosted in London. The hockey team consisted of Balbir Singh and the other players from Pakistan.
The role Akshay Kumar portrays in the movie is inspired from Balbir Singh. In real life, Balbir Singh was a freedom fighter’s son who received a hockey stick as his birthday present. The hockey legend received the Padma Shri in 1957.
Balbir Singh was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The President of Finland released pigeons and there were droppings on the flag. As Balbir Singh was about to wipe off the dropping when an Olympic official patted him and said,
“You are going to be champs again. We believe, in Finland, that when a bird ‘dirties’ your left boot, nothing can stop you from succeeding!”
Singh’s jersey number was 13. Our man was told that 13 might be unlucky. This is what he had to say:
“In most Indian languages, the number 13 is pronounced as ‘tera’ — meaning God. I can’t be luckier!”
And not only did India win the match, they also scored 13 goals. They got the Gold medal home. Balbir Singh is responsible for three Olympic Gold medals and two Silver ones in 1958 and 1962 Asian Games at Tokyo and Jakarta respectively.
As it seems in the trailer, the creators of the movie have taken the liberty to make Akshay Kumar’s character look like a Bengali.
