Bollywood is gearing up for yet another year of blockbuster releases. In 2019, movies like WarKabir Singh and URI: The Surgical Strike surpassed expectations and stood out as some of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of the year. In 2020, many superhit directors will be bringing their films to the silver screen and the battle for the top spot is about to get more intense. Even though we shall not be seeing films by Karan JoharZoya AkhtarRajkummar Hirani or Anurag Kashyap, it will still be an exciting year in cinemas because of these directors and their upcoming films:

Meghna Gulzar

After her success with the 2018 film Raazi, Meghna is back with yet another drama, this time starring Deepika Padukone in the lead role. Chhapaak is set to release in theatres on the 10th of January.

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

Ashwiny’s Bareilly Ki Barfi was a massive hit in 2017 and her latest film Panga is all set for a release on the 24th of January. It has Kangana Ranaut in the lead role with Jassie Gill starring opposite her.

Hansal Mehta

After critically acclaimed films like Shahid, Citylights, Aligarh, and Omerta, Hansal Mehta is once again set to collaborate with Rajkummar Rao for Chhalaang, which releases on the 31st of January.

Imtiaz Ali

Imtiaz’s last directorial venture Jab Harry Met Sejal may have been a dud but now he is all set for the sequel of his superhit romantic drama Love Aaj Kal. The movie releases on Valentine’s Day 2020.

Anubhav Sinha

Sinha has been lauded by filmgoers for his socially conscious dramas Mulk and Article 15. His next film Thappad stars Taapsee Pannu as the lead and is confirmed for a release on the 28th of February.

Homi Adajania

Saket Chaudhary’s 2017 comedy-drama Hindi Medium gained critical acclaim and success. Its sequel Angrezi Medium will be directed by Homi Adajania and is reported to release sometime in March.

Rohit Shetty

Rohit Shetty’s big ticket this year is the Akshay and Katrina starrer Sooryavanshi, which is set to join the director’s cop-verse (after Singham and Simmba). The movie hits theatres on the 27th of March.

Kabir Khan

Kabir Khan’s ‘83 is expected to be the year’s biggest blockbuster. Starring Ranveer Singh, this sports drama traces Team India’s victory in the Cricket World Cup. The film releases on the 10th of April.

Shoojit Sircar

Sircar is set to have two releases this year – Gulabo Sitabo starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan and Sardar Udham Singh starring Vicky Kaushal. The former release is in April.

David Dhawan

Daddy Dhawan is all set to bring back his classic comedy Coolie No. 1 with a remake starring his son Varun Dhawan in the lead role opposite Sara Ali Khan. The movie will hit theatres on the 1st of May.

Mahesh Bhatt

Bhatt takes the director’s chair after 20 years with the sequel to his 1991 romantic thriller SadakSadak 2 is set to star his daughters Pooja Bhatt and Alia Bhatt and will release on the 10th of July.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Alia will be collaborating with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the first time in Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is slated for a release in September. Inshallah, meanwhile, stands canceled.
