Bollywood has been divided into two, namely commercial and non-commercial movies. The commercial usually has the glam and the top stars and the other usually is the low budget movies with not so famous stars. But this trend is now blurred. Slowly we are seeing that the actors are choosing the script, content before anything else.

It’s because of that this trend that we have unconventional actors. They tend to choose the role which normally people shy away from doing. We are thankful to these actors who are blurring the lines and showing us that even good content movie can give us block busters.

1. Abhay Deol

We might not have seen much of Abhay Deol in the movies but whatever role he enacts, it’s quite different. Whether it’s a thief in Oye Lucky Lucky Oye or a romantic Superman in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Abhay is quite unconventional in the choice of his roles.


From being the modern Devdas to a common salaried man who lost his last local in Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Abhay has performed quite well in the movies.


His upcoming movie, Nanu Ki Jaanu is a dark comedy. The story revolves around a Delhi land mafia agent (Abhay Deol) who has to deal with a ghost in his apartment. It is releasing on 20th April.

2. Rajkummar Rao

Rajkummar Rao is an unconventional actor in the world of Bollywood. His roles in the movies just tell us that he has played quite diverse characters. From being a person trapped in the house to play a political hero, Bose; Rajkummar has done it all.


He has portrayed Shahid Azmi in Shahid (2013), for which he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor. While he has done a few commercial films, his unconventional characters in them stood out. He has been praised by critics for each role he plays and has been the recipient of many awards.


For playing an uptight government clerk in the black comedy Newton (2017), Rao was awarded the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Actor.


He is the most bankable and reliable star and plays the role with perfection. In his upcoming movie, he plays the role of a terrorist.  He plays Omar Saeed Sheikh, one of the most dreadful terrorists in the world. The movie, Omerta is releasing on 20th April.

3. Ayushmann Khurrana

Ayushmann is yet another actor who doesn’t shy away from being an unconventional actor. His debut movie, Vicky Donor was on sperm donation. He loves playing roles which usually commercial actors don’t.

From being married to an obese woman in Dum Laga K Haisha to suffering from erectile dysfunction in Shubh Mangal Savadhan, he has chosen topics which haven’t ventured yet.


He has currently finished the shooting of Badhai Ho and is working on his next. Badhaai Ho is tipped to be a coming-of-age story with a tinge of romance.

4. Nawazuddin Siddiqui

While he had to struggle a lot in the industry, he is still known for his unconventional roles. He was recognized for his role in Gangs of Wasseypur to a hardworking journalist in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.


His work in Manjhi was critically acclaimed and his fans loved him. In Kick, his villainous role was equally loved.


He is currently shooting for Thackeray and his portrayal leaves us stunned.


5. Bhumi Pednekar

Even though she has worked in only 3 films, all of them were quite unconventional. Unlike the other heroines who have to shed their weight for their debut movie, Bhumi gained 30 kgs for her role in Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

Her next movie was about the problems women face because of open defecation. In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, she plays a role of the fierce woman who demands a clean toilet in her household.

In her last film, she was the wife of the husband who was suffering from erectile dysfunction. Her choice in the movies has been quite empowering.

In her upcoming next, she plays the role of the female dacoit. The film, co-starring Sushant Singh Rajput, is a dacoit drama where Bhumi will be seen playing with guns. The crime-thriller titled Sonchiriya is directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the director who brought us gems like Udta Punjab and Ishqiya.


6. Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan has carved a niche for herself in the industry. She is not only unconventional in the movies she chooses, but also how she has managed to wow the audience in the role.

Vidya managed to show to the industry that a woman led movie could not only work but be a blockbuster at the box office. Her role in The Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Tuhmaari Sulu have in a way shown a different side of the woman.


In Parineeta, Paa she managed to show the soft side of her stern personality.

Vidya has committed to produce and star in a biopic of Indira Gandhi, based on Sagarika Ghose’s biography Indira – India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister.
