Shahid Kapoor has proven time and time again that he is capable of successfully getting under the skin of his characters, from light-hearted films like Jab We Met to much grittier ones like Haider. Now, after his critically acclaimed portrayal of a drug-addicted singer Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab, he is set to play another self-destructive character in his latest film. He will step into the shoes of a lovesick alcoholic surgeon as the titular character in Kabir Singh.

Written and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film is a Hindi remake of the filmmaker’s 2017 hit Telugu film titled Arjun Reddy. Starring Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey in lead roles, the Tollywood film was an instant blockbuster. Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani will take on their roles for the Hindi version of this film.

Much like the original, Kabir Singh showcases the Devdas-like story of a man whose love has no bounds. Dr. Kabir Rajveer Singh is an ace academic student who falls in love with Preeti but when their romance comes to a messy end, his life takes a downward spiral. Now a stubborn and self-destructive man, Kabir can’t seem to control his anger and adopts a toxic lifestyle. With a peek at the film’s trailer, we discover that Kabir Singh is very, very angry and that his relationship with Preeti is as toxic as his habits. As the caption for the trailer suggests, “his love has no boundaries and passion that makes him unstoppable”. Check it out below:

Talking about stepping into character, Shahid Kapoor said, “I never judge a character I am playing, I become him. Tommy was a crazy guy, the drugs had messed him up, but Kabir loves intensely and passionately. People need to feel the beauty of his love story to understand his angst and pain when he loses this love and hits the self destruct button. We all go through heartbreaks and can get self-destructive, but this is another level altogether.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Murad Khetani, Krishan Kumar, and Ashwin Varde, Kabir Singh also features Nikita Dutta, Soham Majumdar, and Suresh Oberoi in supporting roles. The film is slated to hit the cinemas on June 21, 2019. Click on the “Interested” button for more updates.
