Coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s 145th birthday anniversary, the Prime Minister of India launched a nationwide cleanliness campaign last week. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or The Clean India Campaign is a massive five-year cleanliness program that urges every citizen of India to dedicate 100 hours every year, towards cleanliness. The drive got-off to an energetic start of October 2nd, where Prime Minister Modi, took a broom and swept a pavement at Valmiki Basti, Delhi.
This well-intended initiative aims at targeting 1.2 Billion citizens, who will in turn help in promoting clean India. The Prime Minister also took to social media to promote the same. Remember the popular awareness campaign – Ice Bucket Challenge? Well this is remotely similar. The Prime Minister has nominated nine public figures for this challenge. The nominees need to post pictures of them cleaning and nominate nine other people. One of the nominees of this list is celebrated actor and Padma Bhushan awardee, Kamal Hassan. In his message the actor said:
"I thank the PM for naming me in the list; and inviting us to the Clean India Campaign. I don’t think this is a new duty I have been appointed to, but I think it is in recognition of what I have already been doing. And, I thank the PMO for recognizing it. I am sure that some of my peers are also chosen, because of what they have already done and capable of. I think this cleaning is something that I have been doing for the past 20 years. My work will continue.
As far as I am concerned, this is not a Public Relations exercise, this is a public service work, that I am part of. And I wish to bring 9 million people to join me. I pursue this agnostic – of Party, politics and philosophies. All these nine peers, whom I’m honored to work with, are not people who have the same philosophy as me, but I am their brother.
I thank the PM for this invitation. I invite 9 million people to invite another 9 million people more, into what I consider is nation building. It is not connected to just one party. It is connected to this one billion and those that constitute this country. Thank you for awakening my commitment again." – KH
We think it’s a terrific way that Kamal Hassan has accepted this initiative. And we certainly hope all his fans will follow his message, of Kamal Hassan propagating this Gandhian thought, of a clean India. They don’t call him ‘Universal Hero’ for nothing.
