Even though one can watch a movie on a TV, laptop or a cell phone, watching a movie in a cinema hall has its own merit. And apart from a movie screening, some theatres are worth giving a visit to because of their fabulous architecture and facilities, and even history, for that matter. There are many heritage theatres that have been there since the inception of Cinema and are famous for their specialties. Here are four such cinema halls of India that deserve a special mention.

Maratha Mandir, Mumbai

Maratha Mandir - BookMyShow

Opened in 1958, Maratha Mandir, as everyone knows, is a single screen cinema hall famous for screening DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) till date, since its release on 19th October 1995. Last year, there were rumors that the screening will be stopped after the 1000th week because the theatre is suffering a huge loss, but the MD Mr. Manoj Desai clarified later that they will continue to screen the movie as long as he and director Aditya Chopra wants. The movie runs to a full house on weekends even now!

Minerva Theatre, Mumbai

When it comes to screening a movie for the longest period of time, Minerva Theatre seconds Maratha Mandir by screening Sholay for a duration of five years from its release in 1975 to 1980. Once the biggest theatre of Mumbai with 1501 seats, it witnessed many blockbusters, silver and golden jubilees. At its time, it was said that one has not achieved stardom if his/her movie is not screened at Minerva Theatre.

Raj Mandir, Jaipur

Raj Mandir, often referred to as the Pride of Asia, is known for its opulent interiors. Owned by Bhuramal Rajmal Surana, it was the dream-child of Mehtab Chandra Golcha, who wanted a cinema that would be more than just a showcase for a movie, that would be known for its style and elegance. He wanted the audience to feel like they are the royal guests at a palace and are invited to enjoy wholesome entertainment. And that idea has indubitably given India a theatre to be proud of. It is indeed one the most popular tourist attractions in Jaipur.

Prasads IMAX, Hyderabad

Prasads IMAX - BookMyShow

With a 72-foot high, 95-foot wide screen and a seating capacity of 635, accompanied by a 12,000-watt sound system, Prasads IMAX is one of the most popular and largest screens in the world. The IMAX screen got the highest audience for the Harry Potter and Spider-Man series. Though because of digitization and unavailability of a digital projector for the very large screen, Prasads is no longer screening IMAX films. But they have promised to get the required machinery as soon as it is available and start the screenings once again.
