It’s a wonderful time for Malayalam film fans. From national acclaim to experimentation, Mollywood has trod an interesting path in the past decade, achieving its first movie that crossed the 150+ crore club with Pulimurugan. Starring Mohanlal, the movie exposed the Malayalam film industry to the possibility of making big-budget films.
While Mohanlal’s thriller Neerali is all set to take the box-office by storm, the actor released a teaser for his upcoming fantasy-thriller, Odiyan. The teaser easily evokes a sense of mystery with the titular character Odiyan Manikyan asking viewers if we’re ready to see his magic tricks. The movie is based on the story of a tribal community who makes their living by scaring people in the dark. Partly rooted in history and partly in folklore, the tales of Odiyan have scared people for decades in the pre-electricity era. Half-men-half-beasts, the Odiyan community attributed their shape-shifting powers to black magic.
If you haven’t watched the teaser yet, here it is.

Odiyan has made headlines ever since the movie was announced, thanks to Mohanlal’s drastic weight loss to play the younger version of the titular character. Apart from Mohanlal, the movie also stars Manju Warrier, Sathyaraj, Prakash Raj, and Narain in lead roles. Odiyan would be the directorial debut of ad-filmmaker VA Shrikumar Menon.
Speaking about the movie, here’s what Mohanlal had to reveal: “The movie happens back home in Thenkurisi. Manikyan leaves everything to come here (Kashi) and spend his last few days. But now he is forced to go home due to certain developments.”
Mohanlal and VA Shrikumar will also unite for The Mahabharata, which will have Mohanlal starring as Bheema. The magnum opus is touted to be India’s most expensive film, with a budget of over INR 1000 crores. Apart from Neerali and Odiyan, Mohanlal also plays an extended cameo as Ithikkara Pakki in Kayamkulam Kochunni, which is directed by Rosshan Andrrews and will be released this year in December.
Odiyan is slated to hit the theatres on October 11, 2018.
