The Marathi suspense-thriller Aapla Manus marks Ajay Devgn's debut as a producer in the Marathi film industry, along with Watergate Productions. This film boasts of a talented cast including Sumeet Raghavan, Iravati Harshe, and Nana Patekar as Maruti Nagargoje, a Crime Branch inspector, who is methodic and in charge of investigating the death of the father of Sumeet's character.

Directed by Satish Rajwade, this well-crafted whodunit has been adapted from a (very) popular Marathi play Katkon Trikon, where Nana's role was portrayed by Dr. Mohan Agashe. Anyone who has grown up Marathi in the 90s, you'll agree that this 1999 thriller was probably one of the first new-age Marathi suspense movies with the perfect ingredients – a strange murder in a girl's hostel, a determined police officer and two girls caught in between this chaos.

#3 Drishyam

This fast-paced film has made satsang and 2nd October famous like nobody's business. Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) weaves an elaborate web of memory manipulation in order to defend himself and his family from a catastrophic murder allegation. This originally Malayalam thriller did so well that is was adapted in four more languages later and all the versions were loved by the audiences. 

#4 Kahaani

There is a seemingly helpless, pregnant woman asking the police for their help in finding her missing husband and then there is the pragmatic and methodic cop Mr. Khan, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. But nothing is how it appears and the investigation takes a strange turn to reveal things that make our jaw drop. 

#5 Manorama 6 Feet Under

Satyaveer (Abhay Deol), a bored public works engineer, is hired by Manorama to investigate what the activities of her affluent politician husband. Shortly after this, Manorama commits suicide only to reveal that she was not who she claimed to be and raising questions about whether she really committed suicide. Emotions interweaved with thrill and mystery, Aapla Manus also gives a similar vibe.

#6 Talaash

One night, Armaan Kapoor loses control of his car and drives it right into the sea, thus killing him. Inspector Surjan Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) investigates this murder while dealing with his own personal problems – bereavement owing to the death of his 8-year-old son. Throughout the movie, it seems like the inspector is losing his mind only to end in a mind-numbing climax. This, too, is a suspense movie laced with emotions, not unlike Aapla Manus.

#7 Gupt

Dead father – check, an able but ruthless inspector – check, a son accused of being responsible for his father's death – check, palpable thrill – check, an unexpected climax – check. Gupt has all the elements required for a strong whodunit; just like Aapla Manus.
