Movie Predictions – Which Superhero Movie Will Rule 2016

2015 had 3 big superhero releases – Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Fantastic Four. Age of Ultron did brisk business at the BO and managed to entertain many fans. Ant-Man was a surprise entry, with a niche superhero being introduced to the masses. It was a critical as well as a commercial success, and was appreciated by fans of the comic as well as newbies. Fantastic Four didn’t quite perform as fantastically as many hoped, and was a huge letdown, especially at the BO. 2016 promises to be a great year for fans of the superhero genre. This year, moviegoers will be spoilt for choice, with 8 movies releasing. Here are our predictions for which one will rule 2016, just so we can turn back at the end of 2016 and say we told you so.

1. Deadpool – February 12

The Merc with a mouth finally has his own movie, that for now, seems like it draws heavily from the comics. The biggest treat? That it’s going to be an R-rated film, filled with expletives, chimichangas and tights – everything that we love from the Deadpool comics.

2. Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25

One of the biggest films of 2016, BvS will see two of contemporary comics’ finest characters square off on screen. With Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader and Henry Cavill reprising his role as the Man of Steel, this one is going to be a ripper.

3. Captain America: Civil War – May 6

Another epic comic rivalry, Captain America: Civil War will see good old Cap take on fellow Avenger and friend Tony Stark/Iron Man. With supporting acts by Black Panther, Iron Patriot, Scarlet Witch and more, war has never seemed more welcome.

4. X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27

With Apocalypse finally making it to the big screen, X-Men: Apocalypse will see the immortal titular character trying to create a new world order only for mutants, as the fate of the rest of the lives on Earth hangs in the balance.

5. Suicide Squad – August 5

Another fine offering from DC, Suicide Squad will mark the debut of Jared Leto as the Joker. The film will also see some of DC Comics’ most iconic villains, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and many more.

6. Gambit – October 7

Gambit will mark the return of the Cajun hero after his brief appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With Channing Tatum being billed to play the character, details about the film are in short supply.

7. Doctor Strange – November 4

Recently, the makers of Doctor Strange released the first photos of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. The casting is perfect, and no one has ever looked more perfect in a comic character’s skin. Except for Christian Bale as the Batman, of course.

8. Sinister Six – November 11

Sinister Six will see your friendly neighborhood Spiderman take on six of New York’s worst criminals as they try to destroy him. As is the case with Gambit, details are also shrouded in a web of rumors.

Now, for our predictions:

Batman Vs. Superman and Captain America: Civil War will set the box office registers ringing, and will possibly be the biggest hits of 2016. Deadpool will be a favorite amongst the crowds, but will suffer because of the R-rated humor. X-Men: Apocalypse will perform comfortably, but without much hype, since it doesn’t appeal to mainstream audiences. Suicide Squad will see many flock to cinemas, just for Harley Quinn’s and the Joker’s sake. Gambit and Doctor Strange will also perform admirably, with Channing Tatum and Benedict Cumberbatch being the big draws. Sinister Six will appeal to most Marvel fans, looking for a fresh take on Spiderman’s story arc.

Here’s what the box office figures might look like (Top 5 for 2016):

#1 – Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

#2 – Captain America: Civil War

#3 – Deadpool

#4 – Suicide Squad

#5 – X-Men: Apocalypse

Boy, 2016 is going to be a good time to be alive.
