Moonlight won its well-deserved award for the Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars after some confusion where La La Land was announced to be the winner first. It ended up winning three awards, with Mahershala Ali becoming the first Muslim to win an Oscar. However, it's not the awards that matter, it's how many people the movie has touched. If you've seen Moonlight, you realize how special it is. Movies like this are rare, where they make you empathize with characters who you wouldn't have thought you could ever connect with. These are some more movies that will have a lasting impact on you – just like Moonlight.

Blackbird is the story of a gay teenager in a small baptist town who struggles between his religion and his sexual identity. It deals with very similar issues to Moonlight. This was not as critically-acclaimed but it is certainly one of the movies that will give you a different perspective into the lives of LGBTQ.

The Elephant Man

The Elephant Man is the story of a severely deformed man who is mistreated by others. This film was directed by David Lynch, who never got an Oscar himself, but the movie received eight Oscar nominations and prompted the creation of the Best Makeup category, which Suicide Squad won in the 2017 Oscars. This movie is hard to watch but it will make you a more compassionate person.

Lars and the Real Girl
Movies like Moonlight - BookMyShow

This movie stars Ryan Gosling but he doesn't play the slick hero with witty quips like we've seen him play in the musical La La Land. In this touching movie, he plays the role of a socially awkward man who develops a romantic non-sexual relationship with an anatomically correct doll. It's critically-acclaimed, a little odd, but it is endlessly endearing and will stay with you.

The movie Loving tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving who ended up fighting a legal battle that changed the law that had criminalized interracial marriages. This is a look into a very real part of history that will make you appreciate the relatively wider freedom available today. It evokes hope and shows you a brighter future is possible.
