7 Hollywood Movies That Were Adapted From Popular Video Games

Movies, in recent times, have chosen to inspire storylines from other forms of entertainment. This has helped in pulling the audience who have preferred those versions of the stories to give the 70mm screen a try. They have also turned their sights towards games which have a following and cults of their own. Here are some movies which have been inspired by video games, mobile games or online games.

Mortal Kombat

Who doesn't love a good fight to the death featuring martial arts? Even though many knew about the game before the movie released, Mortal Kombat became popular worldwide afterward. There is even a reboot for this in the works, which is rumored to be grittier than the original.

Resident Evil

Although Resident Evil films were only loosely based on the video games, it gave the fans exactly what they wanted – fast-paced action in a familiar setting. It's the highest-grossing film franchise based on a video game that's earned over a billion dollars worldwide.

Prince of Persia

The game was first released in 1989 and has upgraded over the years. The 2010 movie was based on the Sands of Time trilogy of the game. The movie was well-received by the audience but not much by the critics. There might be a sequel and it will surely be better than the first one.

Battleship

This movie which released in 2012 was loosely based on the board game of the same name. You must remember playing those with your friends! Unfortunately, the movie didn’t do very well with the critics bashing it, saying it wasn’t as fun as the game.

Hitman

The cloned assassin is hired for a mission and it is your responsibility that he carries it out successfully. Sounds like an exciting game, doesn’t it? Once more, the movie failed to live up to the expectations. But if they try again, in the current age of technology, it might work.

Assassins Creed

This movie starring Michael Fassbender was based on the game of the same name, which follows a cult of assassins through a fictional history of real-world events. There have been nine games in the series so far and it has also been Ubisoft’s highest grossing franchise.

Tomb Raider

This action-adventure game was launched in 1996 and was very popular, with over 7.5 million copies sold worldwide. A remake was released in the year 2007 to celebrate its 10th anniversary. And in the year 2013, the series was rebooted. The 2001 movie starring Angelina Jolie was one of the highest grossing movies of the time. The Tomb Raider films also now have a reboot, with Alicia Vikander taking Jolie's place to become the new Lara Croft. Book tickets for the new Tomb Raider film here.

Gaming may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But there is no doubt that there are some real gems hidden there. We hope movie makers try to find more such gems and do a good job of making them into movies.
