Mr. Turner is a portrait of the iconic British landscape artist JMW Turner. The film begins in 1826 when Turner is fifty-one and already famous. He spends his time traveling, sketching and furiously, painting. Turner lives with his father who looks after him – with a tender affection, Turner senior does everything from buying paints to selling paintings. There’s also the housekeeper – Turner has sexual relations with her but barely registers her presence. From time to time, his angry, estranged wife and daughters show up. Turner barely registers them either – in fact when a daughter dies, he doesn’t show up for the funeral. Turner’s most enduring relationship is with his art.
