Verdict: A thoroughly entertaining cat and giant mouse chase.

Back in its day, the original Rampage video game gave players a unique experience. When other games focused on fighting invaders and saving cities, Rampage let players embrace the chaos and play Godzilla. In that sense, this live-action film definitely sticks to that brand of entertainment. Rampage is full of exaggerated action featuring giant monsters and the legendary Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

What’s Rampage About:

Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson) is a primatologist who shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla. George has been in Davis’ care since he was rescued as a young orphan from poachers.

But after being exposed to a genetic experiment gone wrong, this gentle ape goes rogue as he begins to mutate into an enormous and volatile creature. As other creatures affected by this mutation also begin to appear, it is up to Davis to come up with a humane solution. He teams with a discredited genetic engineer (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote while engaging in the battle of a lifetime to prevent a colossal catastrophe.

What Works:

Rampage couldn’t possibly recreate the original video game on screen any better. Featuring a generous amount of CGI action sequences and more than enough carnage, it is entertainingly over-the-top. It does stray away from the game by switching the plot from trying to reduce cities to rubble to trying to prevent that from happening. But it definitely doesn’t skimp on the chaotic destruction that the 1980s game delivered.

A majority of the first half of the film focuses on building the relationship between Davis and George that eventually fuels the plot. You begin to feel for the animal and it eventually gives you something to root for in the final act. All of this character development gives the movie enough room to go ape crazy (literally) with the action in the final act of the film.

Along with a delightful concoction of elements for the perfect action film i.e. a loathful corporate villain, a strong and lovable hero, a genius scientist, giant monsters, and impending chaos, Rampage also gives us a little something to think about. Are humans the real monsters?

All in all, Rampage gives you everything you would expect from this kind of a video game film – explosive action, humorous banter, and maybe a little bit of soul.

Get ready for unadulterated entertainment with tons of destruction, epic action and also, The Rock.

What Could’ve Been Better:

There may be a few plot holes in the film along with a lot of unapologetically over-the-top carnage. But in a movie based on an arcade game, the only goal is to get to the big fight or indulge in the fantasy of leveling a city.

Why You Should Watch It:

We walk into this movie looking for two things – Dwayne Johnson’s brawny good looks and slapstick humor along with ginormous animals seeking to wreak havoc. And Rampage definitely delivers and gives you enough action to cheer for. So if you love The Rock and you’re a fan of unadulterated action, book your tickets for Rampage now!
