Verdict: A masterful retelling, brought to life by the music.
The old Hollywood classic, A Star Is Born has now received its fourth reincarnation with Bradley Cooper co-writing, directing, and starring in the film alongside the legendary Lady Gaga. This musical romance is a remake of three films of the same name – the first film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in 1937, the second one starring Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954, and the third starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976. Now Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are receiving critical acclaim for bringing their own original touch to this emotional tale.
What’s A Star Is Born About:
In this retelling of the classic Hollywood love story, a worn-out musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) is seen battling with substance abuse. One drunken night, he finds himself in a drag bar where he discovers the supremely talented yet insecure artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has been turned down by plenty of industry professionals and begins to give up on her dream until Jack forces her to share her voice and break into the spotlight. As Ally is catapulted into fame, Jack begins to spiral, still battling with his demons. Thus begins the tragic tale of the birth of a new star as another one bites the dust.
With his directorial debut, Bradley Cooper is triumphant in many different aspects. He takes the tale of a worn-out musician discovering a diamond in the rough – the one that we’ve heard like a broken record, – and makes it stand on its own two feet. Along with co-writer Eric Roth, he doesn’t just give us an original take but also pays homage to the critically acclaimed films that came before it. Cooper doesn’t fail to deliver as the lead actor either. He is raw and convincing as a seasoned artist who has seen the good and the bad sides of the music industry. Along with Cooper, Lady Gaga makes herself known as an actor. She brings her own experiences in the music industry to her character along with some praise-worthy original music, making her performance genuine and layered. In that sense, this film lives up to its name in more than one way.
What Could’ve Been Better:
There’s no denying that A Star Is Born entirely indulges in terms of emotions and sentimental moments. But even though melodrama has bad rep sometimes, this film makes you think otherwise.
Why You Should Watch:
This remake done right will make you realize that a retold story can also be equally compelling. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga take you on a deep-rooted and personal journey into the music industry. To quote the lyrics of the lead characters’ duet, “We’re off the deep end, watch as we dive in.”
