Verdict: A high-level conspiracy wrapped up in a thrilling adventure.
Angel Has Fallen is the third installation in the ‘Has Fallen’ series after Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. The protagonist of these three movies is secret service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) who is not just any agent, he’s ‘THE’ secret service agent. In all three movies, Mike’s job has been to be the guardian of the President of the United States and save him from various assassination plots. This time around, it’s the guardian angel who has fallen and found himself in the middle of a larger conspiracy.
What’s Angel Has Fallen About:
The film opens with Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) at a training site owned by his friend Wade Jennings (Danny Huston), who served in the army with him. The training that Mike undergoes leaves him facing a brutal reality, he’s not in a good shape physically. However, being the guardian angel to President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), he has to hide this truth from all including his wife (Piper Perabo). One day, the President goes on a fishing expedition, and he and his security detail is attacked by drones which kill everyone on-site except the President and Mike Banning. When Mike wakes up at the hospital, he realizes he’s been handcuffed. FBI agent Helen Thompson (Jada Pinkett Smith) explains to him that his DNA has been found in the vehicle that sent the drones to kill the President. Mike goes from being the person who saved the President’s life to the person who allegedly tried to kill him. Now, Mike must endure a difficult journey to find out who has framed him. He soon discovers the President’s life is still in danger and the “most wanted man in America” must find a way to save himself and the President.
Gerard Butler plays his classic rugged, know-it-all, brash yet charming Mike Banning character to the tee. His relationship with his father Clay Banning (Nick Nolte) is the spark in this film. Seeing Clay evolve from a grumpy old man who lives off-grid and isolated to an old man who cares about his son even when the world wants him dead is extremely heart-warming. All the actors do a good job in bringing the film together with their individual contributions. Also, there are certain portions of the film that will leave you at the edge of your seat with its thrilling sequences.
What Could Have Been Better:
The film is quite predictable though it does throw in a few plot twists. While Angel Has Fallen prides itself on being an action film, the action could have been pumped up a little.
