When you think of a Marvel movie, you think about an epic superhero, who can deliver the wittiest lines while fighting off an army of villains, and is a huge badass. And much to our delight, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, is everything we expect him to be.
In a world where most Marvel movies are tied together, Ant-Man stands alone. And that is exactly what makes it a work of brilliance. It gets straight to the point, and gives you the complete Marvel treatment. You will bite your nails, hang off the edge of your seat, and then shake your head in disbelief, marvelling (pun intended) at what’s happening on screen.
The film tells the tale of Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), a convict who has been released from prison. Finally on the outside, he wants only one thing – to spend time with his daughter, Cassie. However, his ex-wife and her new husband are a little less than trusting, given that he’s just back from prison. Scott desperately wants to be the hero his daughter thinks he is. But he has to turn to a life of crime again, just so he can pay child support and see his daughter over the weekend. He breaks in to rob a house, but instead of finding money in the safe, he finds the Ant-Man suit. Meanwhile, the first Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym (played by a brilliant Michael Douglas) is watching his company being taken away from him by his protégé, Darren Cross (played by Corey Stoll). Cross wants to create a weapon with the Ant-Man tech, something which could possibly destroy the entire world. This plan makes Dr. Pym want Scott to be the Ant-Man, and save his company, and the world.
Paul Rudd is amazing as Scott Lang and the Ant-Man, and effortlessly makes you love his character. However, who really takes the cake in this film is Michael Pena, who plays Scott’s friend, Luis. He leaves you chuckling as you walk out of the theatre, and walks away with the best lines. There are also a few well-hidden easter eggs, and a cameo by Falcon (Anthony Mackie), from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as Stan Lee! And make sure you watch the post-credits scene!
