Verdict: The most breath-taking science-fiction film of the year.
From a short story written by Philip K. Dick, a whole universe has emerged that is in the making of another successful franchise. Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to the 1982 film, Blade Runner, which starred Harrison Ford. Now, almost thirty years later, Ryan Gosling has stepped into Ford’s shoes for another mission that will lead him to discover secrets he never thought he’d find.
What It’s About:
Blade Runner 2049 picks up thirty years after the events of the original Blade Runner, which took place in a futuristic setting of 2019. In 2019, Tyrell Corporation has successfully created replicants – genetically created humans that are stronger and more suitable for slave labor. The replicants are sent to off-world colonies to work and are outlawed on earth. Those that escape are hunted down by Blade Runners, such as the one Harrison Ford played – Richard Deckard. Killing them was called ‘retirement’, only to mask what it really was – ‘extermination’. In 2049, the blade runner is Officer K, played by Ryan Gosling, who has an equally strong presence as Ford. In investigating a case, K is led down a path that makes him question everything about the world he lives in.
The aesthetics of the film are some of the best you will get to experience on the screen. Cinematographer Roger Deakins has presented some of the very best work of his career to date, which might make Blade Runner 2049 an Oscar contender based on visuals alone. It is faithful to Ridley Scott’s original creation, building a future that is unlike what most sci-fi movies offer. The acting from all fronts is spectacular – even from actors only seen in a few scenes. It’s not just action and visuals either – it offers a deeper perspective into what humanity actually means.
What Could Have Been Better:
Blade Runner 2049 is sheer perfection when considering the history of the series. Denis Villeneuve has brought forth a sequel that nobody had considered would even exist. The original Blade Runner film released to a lukewarm response. It was only over the years that it grew into an influential cult classic that shaped science-fiction movies that followed. Blade Runner 2049 is one of the few hyped movies that lives up to all that it promises.
Why You Should Watch:
Even if you’re not familiar with the original film, Blade Runner 2049 is a delight to watch on the big screen. Fans of science-fiction films or fans of Ryan Gosling will see the best of both. A clever story and a refreshing step away from conventional blockbusters make every second of this film worth watching.
