You are stuck in a boring job, you have had the worst traffic that your clutch leg can bear. You are eating cold sandwiches for lunch. The world seems bleak and gray. All around you is the sense of dullness. You need to snap out of your funk. Get out of the working week blues. Here is the cure. The Expendables 3 makes up for all those dull times. Guns, bullets, explosions and hand-to-hand combat, this film has it all. You are in for a movie filled with mayhem, madness and monkey business. If you are wondering what aging action heroes have to offer these days, then wonder no more. These guys have grown old with us and they remind us that age is just a state of mind. Get set for a whole new gang of gung-ho, ar$¢-kicking and name-taking good guys.
Directed by Patrick Hughes, The Expendables 3 gets the gang back together. We have the biggest collection of pecs, delts, biceps and shoulders ever assembled. We have Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Terry Crews, Ronda Rousey, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz and more. The cast reads like a virtual who’s-who of the action world. You have watched at least one movie starring each of the above. This film takes you right in the thick of it. Barney (Stallone) is working and doing what he does best. With the rest of his rag tag crew, they do what needs to be done. Suddenly in the middle of a job, Saint Barney and his angels face an ex- Expendable. Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) is a ruthless warlord and arms dealer. Once left for dead, he is back to wreak havoc. All that stands in his way is the collective might of the Expendables. But they aren’t what they used to be. Barney decides to retire the old team and hire new blood. This is when things hit the fan. S#!% goes sideways and fast. Before you can even say “I’ll be back”, they are gone. And now, it is up to the guys from the action-hero retiree home to bring the pain. Interested? I know that I was. The movie takes off from there.
In this movie, we have a mega cast. But sometimes, there is just one person who makes the movie completely entertaining. That is Antonio Banderas. Playing an aged special forces guy with a whole bunch of eccentricities, he is a breath of fresh air for the film. He has the funniest lines, the smoothest approach and most amount of fun playing Galgo a.k.a. Go-go, but according to him “that sounds like a Parisian hooker.” We are treated to the same old set of biff, bam and boom but the humor shines through. In this film, the stars know that the world sees them as old, but it doesn’t stop them from having fun with each other. Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, Couture, Crews, Schwarzenegger and Grammer do their thing extremely well. Gibson is fun to watch as a villain. He sinks his teeth into the act and lets loose on the screen. But it is Banderas who makes you smile. He oozes Latin charm and cutthroat menace in a brilliantly comic way. You will be holding on to your sides as you giggle at the little jokes. Snipes reminds us why he has been the bad mother-(Shut yo’ Mouth).
The plot is thin, sure. Predictable maybe, but the execution is good. We have Ford making his mark as a pilot who was a hotshot and he is still top gun. Remind you of someone? The movie takes you on a ride and doesn’t stop till the last bullet is fired and the last corny joke is cracked. As you might have guessed, it is Stallone who gets it. But hey, we’ve got to admit, from a bunch of has-beens, we get a not-so-subtle-reminder that they are the ones pushed, the ones who got up after being knocked down, the ones who fought for the little guys. All in all, a watchable movie with the action building till the very end.
Why should you watch the film?
Antonio. That is the first reason that pops up. He makes the most of his role and makes it a wonderful experience to watch. You are left wondering, whether we will get to see more of him as this character. The rest of the cast is good enough. The MMA fighters are good and Ronda Rousey is a delight. But it is the old guard who get the laughs and the comebacks. It is just another day in business and business is booming!
