Verdict: Hop on for a journey filled with twists and turns.
Amazon Studios had a great lineup of films in 2017 with The Big Sick getting an Oscar nomination. Their first flick of this year – Gringo – is a crime comedy starring Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, David Oyelowo, Amanda Seyfried, and Thandie Newton. The film releases today, so check out if it’s worth your money.
What’s Gringo About:
Gringo begins with businessman Richard Rusk (Joel Edgerton) receiving a call from his teammate Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) in which he claims to be kidnapped. Harold had traveled with Rusk and Elaine (Charlize Theron), another employee of the company, to Mexico and things didn't go as planned. He discovers that his co-workers are playing him and aren’t as nice as they seem to be. With his life in danger, he comes up with ways to outsmart the duo and dupe them. Multiple characters like a drug lord, who is a fan of The Beatles and Rusk’s brother, who wants to help raise fund for survivors of the Haiti earthquake, add to the confusion.
Gringo has equal parts of thrills and comedy. While you keep wondering what will happen to the protagonist, you’ll be amused by the witty one-liners and the way the characters find humor in difficult situations. It is a refreshing change to see David Oyelowo in a film like Gringo. The actor, who generally stars in the hardcore dramas, has a flair for comedy. He plays the role with subtlety and you can’t help but root for him. Edgerton, who was recently seen in Bright and Red Sparrow, is spot on as a man with no morals. Besides acting in it, Theron has also co-produced this movie and is decent even though her character doesn't have much to do.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The screenplay could've been a bit tighter. The film has a fun plot but many scenes seem a little out of context and don’t add up. While a lot of time has been dedicated to the story's build-up, the climax leaves us wanting more.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
What’s not to enjoy in a film that offers humor, suspense and a bit of action? Gringo is a popcorn entertainer, which you must catch over the weekend.
