Jack Reacher: Movie Review

Review: Here comes another action-hero from a fiction novel (One Shot by Lee Child). Jack Reacher is an ex-army cop who is pretty much off the grid and surfaces only when required.

This time it was because of a shooting that killed five random people. An old relationship with an ex-army colleague brings Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) to surface back on the grid. The intention of this movie was to have movie-goers on the edge of their seats. In some parts it will definitely have you on the edge of your seats, but in others it will be quite the opposite. Moreover, fans of the novel may be a tad-bit disappointed when they see that Jack Reacher in the movie is only about 5 feet 7 inches tall as opposed to the Jack Reacher in the book who is 6 feet 5 inches tall. Though the character in the movie doesn’t really match up on the height aspect, the rest of the character was pretty much the same. An intelligent cop, a superb marksman, someone who can tell the time without looking at his watch, someone who can remember every detail of a crime scene without really taking notes and someone who has some killer action moves, Jack Reacher (in the movie) is up to mark with all other aspects and features of the character from the book.

The first half of this movie is quite exhilarating to say the least. Quirky dialogues, gripping scenes and much more make the first half of the movie quite brilliant. Thankfully, it was better than one would have expected. The second half, though, was a slight letdown. The movie did not hang on to its initial pace. The jokes became sour, the action was too prolonged and the suspense that leads to the twist was revealed much too soon. There were quite a few scenes filled with over-theatricality and over-dramatics. There was too less happening within an infinite period of time.

Overall, as a movie, it isn’t all that bad. Jack Reacher reminded me of Jason Bourne in bits and pieces (not anywhere near as cool as Bourne, but will suffice). The background score was quite neatly done. Tom Cruise acted stupendously and did complete justice to the role (barring his height of course). Helen (Rosamund Pike) who played the shooter’s defense attorney did a good job as well. Her character was charming yet finicky. On the whole, director Christopher McQuarrie has done a pretty decent job of bringing Jack Reacher to life.

Verdict: A really cool protagonist and a decent suspense thriller. Go for it.
