Verdict: A spellbinding film carried on the wings of Angelina Jolie.
Back in 2014, Disney gave us the dark fantasy film Maleficent, which put a unique spin on the classic Sleeping Beauty story. This film gave Angelina Jolie wings to fly and a dark character to embody as her own. It also demonstrated a metamorphosis of the evil fairy’s character into the godmother of the very child she cursed. Five years later, we now have a sequel that takes off from where the first film had ended.
What’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil About:
In this sequel, we see that Aurora (Elle Fanning) has progressed to becoming the Queen of the thriving and magical Moors and her fairy godmother Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) still has her deadpan face going for her. Things take a turn when Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson) from the neighboring kingdom proposes to Aurora. Although Maleficent is against the marriage, she gives in to make her daughter happy. All is well until we find out that Philip’s mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) is an evil Queen who wants to destroy Maleficent and her precious Moors.
Angelina Jolie and her character Maleficent have become synonymous – they were made for each other. Maleficent’s lack of social skills and her reluctant attempt to acquire some is a definitive highlight that makes you smile. Michelle Pfeiffer plays an excellent evil Queen and makes for a great adversary. She is relentless and will stop at nothing to quench her power-hungry appetite. This film also manages to captivate you with its magical charm and make you fall in love with some of the enchanted creatures. Moreover, we get a chance to see where Maleficent comes from and even get to meet other faires like her.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The film’s narrative is a tad bit weak and begins to lose some of its charm by the halfway mark. Angeline Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer’s characters are what sustain and carry the film through to the end.
Why You Should Watch:
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will keep you spellbound throughout as you journey through this magical fantasy. Like most Disney films, it has a heartwarming and happy ending that will definitely put a smile on your face.
