Director: Tarsem Singh
Cast: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer , Nathan Lane, Jordan Prentice , Mark Povinelli , Joe Gnoffo
Synopsis: One of the most beloved stories of all time is coming to life in the motion picture Snow White legend, Mirror Mirror. A fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend, Mirror Mirror features breakout star Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, a princess in exile, and Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom. Seven courageous rebel dwarfs join forces with Snow White as she fights to reclaim her birthright and win her Prince in this magical adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences the world over. The film also stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the Prince, and Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen.
Review: There’s always something extremely likeable about schmaltzy fairytales. We have grown up reading the likes of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Snow White, ofcourse, is the most favourite amongst many storytellers and filmmakers. "Mirror Mirror" is the latest adaptation of the timeless fairytale classic that tells the story of the beautiful princess in despair. Her stepmother, we all know is a cruel witch who had duped the King into marrying her so she could take control over the entire kingdom. More so, she was jealous of her stepdaughter for more than one reason, and no, there are absolutely no points for guessing the obvious.
Tarsem Singh is a master storyteller however his expertise get marred whenever he takes to the director’s chair. The last film he directed was “Immortals” which had an average faring at the BO. The story is different, so are the characters however the genre hasn’t been tampered with. Fantasy seems to be Singh’s comfort zone.
"Mirror Mirror" is just about a one-time watch because of the curiosity built up around it, everyone must know what is different in this venture when we all know the story already. I only found two features that shone above all the rest. Julia Roberts, indeed is a star, a treat to watch everytime she appears on screen. Last seen in the film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel “Eat, Pray, Love”, she appears in this fantasy flick as The Evil Queen. I have to admit that her talent has brought her to this pedestal where she can just about portray any character with utmost panache. The dialogues were very well-written since they emitted the right amount of satire as was expected out of a “evil” read: cynical queen.
Lily Collins was bestowed with the role of the ‘white as snow’ Snow White, unfortunately couldnot pull off the role too convincingly. Her knight in shining armour – The Prince of Valencia (Armie Hammer) enters at the wrong time in the story. See that’s the thing with these stories, if not aptly retold, they lose their magical touch. Here, it looked more like a stage act with limited persons focussed upon every now and then. The loose ends unfortunately could not save the film kept together through the satire and Julia Roberts’s presence. Besides, Snow White is a beautiful woman, it’s a complacent thought to go with just about anything. The film required more than just a baby face actress to play Snow White. It’s a tad-bit difficult to blatantly say it but Lily Collins could have been made to look a little less frumpy. The gowns both the ladies wore were beautiful except for the hideous gown in the end, passed off as a wedding attire. Like I mentioned before, Julia Roberts seemed like the only saving grace in the film, playing queen and stepmom, which matter of factly is totally different from her initial portrayal as stepmom in the film by the same name. On the whole, I expected a little more from this tweaked version.
Verdict: This isn’t a 3D film, but you will still need glasses – rose-tinted ones to enjoy this film.
