Verdict: Cruise cements his place as an action star once again.

Any Tom Cruise film is a big deal, and a Mission: Impossible film is an even bigger deal. Now going on for 22 years, the franchise is still strong and keeps delighting its fans with its freshness. This, in part, has to do with the change of the director with every film, but this time Mission: Impossible – Fallout is directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie who also directed the last film. Thankfully, this doesn’t seem to have affected the entertainment value at all.

What’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout About:

Mission: Impossible – Fallout picks up two years after where Rogue Nation ended. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF Team of Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames) are racing against time once again, this time to prevent the global catastrophe of a nuclear bombing. Complicating things is the involvement of a CIA assassin, August Walker (Henry Cavill), who will not stop at any cost to complete the mission.

What Works:

As always, Tom Cruise is the star of the show, but he has found his match with Henry Cavill playing an equally competent agent who even gets to one-up Hunt at times. The other newcomers – Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby – are also given room to shine as strong female characters on the opposite ends of the moral spectrum. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames have a great rapport between themselves and Cruise as usual. Many of favorite good and evil characters make a return – Rebecca Fergusson is stunning as Ilsa Faust, Michelle Monaghan is back as Julia to add an emotional angle to the film, Alec Baldwin as Hunley makes a fantastic IMF Secretary, and Sean Harris remains an unnervingly convincing bad guy as Solomon Lane.

The action is unquestionably well done. Mission: Impossible movies have never disappointed its fans with the wild stunts Tom Cruise has done over the years and this time he’s done five major stunts in a single film. With the stunts actually being done, there is no doubt that it looks as real as possible. There are action sequences in almost every conceivable mode of transportation – bikes, cars, helicopters, boats, and on foot. The chases are exciting and abundant.

The plot has many surprises too. The tension in Mission: Impossible – Fallout is nerve-wracking at times and there’s never a dull moment as there’s one thrilling moment after another. Hunt and his team are excellent at figuring out inventive ways to get things done without compromising on their morals. Mission: Impossible – Fallout doesn’t let you forget exactly why we love seeing Ethan Hunt year after year.

What Could Have Been Better:

There isn’t anything you can do to improve upon this multi-million dollar action franchise that already knows what it’s doing.
