Director: Ridley Scott

Cast: Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace

Synopsis: Ridley Scott, director of “Alien“ and “Blade Runner“, returns to the genre he helped define. With “Prometheus“, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth. This takes them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Review: Prometheus is said to be a prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien.

Warning: this review is for those who haven’t seen Alien or most of Ridley Scott’s movies (read not diehard Ridley Scott fans). Scott has a very impressive list of movies like Gladiator and American Gangster under his belt, not to mention a personal favorite T.V. Series, Numbers, also to his credit but after watching Prometheus, I felt it lacked depth. It only touched the surface of the story the director wanted to tell. Many questions were left unanswered and many loopholes in the writing could be pointed out. The visual effects were highly impressive and so were the performances. But the story still lacked character and depth. However, after reading up about the connections to the 1979 flick Alien, all my questions were answered and the loopholes were patched up.

Hence for a layman, Prometheus may not be advisable. You better watch or read up about Alien and then hit the theater to watch this. As a standalone, it can be disappointing and superficial.

As you must have already guessed by now, both movies involve aliens. Prometheus is set in 2089 where two archaeologists, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Chris Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) discover ancient pictograms in a cave that are similar to all their recent discovered pictograms. These pictograms make them believe that visitors from a distant planet have visited earth. A billionaire then funds their expedition to find these aliens who they believe are the origins of the human race. When they land on this unknown planet, they find proof that it had been inhabited by beings that matched human DNA, their excitement couldn’t be held back. But it didn’t last too long. As they explore the structures on the planet, they realize there is a lot more to the extinct species they found. The secrets they discover not only put all their lives in danger but also threaten to jeopardize the future of planet Earth.

A special mention for Michael Fassbender who plays an Android crew member aboard the spaceship Prometheus. He completely steals the show with his robotic demeanor. Noomi Rapace as the archaeologists and practicing Christian is brilliant. So, Prometheus is visually and performance-wise an excellent watch. But for a layman, it will be rather superficial without the background knowledge of Scott’s 1979 classic Alien

Verdict: Watch it for special effects and performances. But avoid it if you haven’t seen the sequel “Alien”.
