Replicas: Film Review – Keanu Brings Back The Dead

Verdict: An interesting sci-fi thriller with unexpected twists.

Many scientific discoveries have been instrumental in advancing human life. So it’s no surprise that even in science fiction, extending the normal human span of life remains a popular topic. Replicas is one such sci-fi film that explores what it would be like if we could bring the dead back and grant them a second life.

What’s Replicas About:

William Foster (Keanu Reeves) is a scientist working on replicating the human brain at Biosyne research facility with every attempt resulting in failure. When his wife Mona (Alice Eve) and his kids die in a tragic car accident, he vows to find a way to bring them all back despite never having been successful before. With the help of his colleague Edward (Thomas Middleditch), Will attempts the impossible even with insurmountable obstacles in his way – because for him, family is everything.

What Works:

Replicas deals with some fascinating questions about mortality and the ethics of bringing back those who have died. There are moments in the film that make you question what you would do in a similar situation. There are a few twists in the story as well that you might not see coming, especially near the climax. These surprises keep Replicas engaging till the end.

Keanu Reeves is excellent as a man trying to cope with the loss of his family, while at the same time attempting to bring them back in a way that might leave them damaged. His character has to make some hard decisions and Reeves has portrayed the struggles of choosing them well. Thomas Middleditch is in a similar neurotic role that we’ve seen him before in Silicon Valley, and he is convincing in his part. Alice Eve is fine as Will’s wife at first and after she becomes a replicant, her performance adds to the eerieness of the whole situation.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The first half starts off a little slow, but it soon picks up the pace. There are a few plot holes you might find if you begin to examine the film, but if you can enjoy the ride without looking too closely, you will have a fun time.

Why You Should Watch:

If you enjoy sci-fi films and are a Keanu Reeves fan, you should watch the film for its interesting concept. Replicas manages to keep you on the edge as you never quite know when things might go wrong for Keanu Reeves’ character. The tension is maintained till the very end and the climax has some interesting ethical implications too.
