Rock of Ages: Movie Review

“I Wanna Rock!”

Director: Adam Shankman

Cast & Crew: Tom Cruise, Bryan Cranston, Julianne Hough , Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin

Synopsis: This is a film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical `Rock of Ages`. This is the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock`n` roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REOSpeedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.

Quick Review: Tom Cruise emerges from a sea of half naked female bodies wearing a cod piece and butt-less leather pants. Obviously piss drunk, he blabbers on only to reinforce his rockstar status. What better way to personify the rockstars of the 80’s?

What “Rock of Ages” offers is full volume nostalgia with its interpretation of the classics of the 80’s rock sensations as well as the lifestyle of that era. The veterans of the 80s would smile at the song selection while cult fanatics would mouth every memorized verse written in stone by rock Gods like Def Leppard, G N R, Bon Jovi, Poison and many more!

“This place is about to become a sea of sweat, earth shattering music and puke”, says Alec Baldwin in one of his yet again must-see performances.

So if you’re a rock fanatic or a crazy Tom Cruise fan, it’s an absolute must watch. If you love musicals and love stories, it’s a must watch. If you’re a fan of none of the above, it’s still a must watch.

Full Review: Small town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough) and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta) meet on Sunset Strip. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance and Hollywood dreams are told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more.

The king of this story, however, is the ultimate Rock God Stacy Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Men want to be him and women want to be with him. Women faint at the sight of him or go completely berserk. This is the status that this booze-hungry, cod piece wearing, out of control, arrogant rockstar commands. But his arrogance has led his band Arsenal to badmouth him to the press. So Stacy starts thinking about going solo. On the other hand Alec Baldwin and Russel Brand play owners of a popular night club called “The Bourbon Room” and they are struggling to make ends meet at the club. They want to get Stacy Jaxx to perform at their club so they can save it from bankruptcy. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Patricia Whitmore who won’t let that happen. She is the mayor’s religious, conservative wife who is hell bent on cleaning up the city and rock music is nothing but filth to her. All these stories start to interject and flow into each other.

Director Shankman picks each sub plot and weaves them flawlessly together with a swish of his wand. At no point do you feel a disconnect between the various sub plots. Performance-wise Tom Cruise takes the cake. There is good and there is bad and then there is a plane that takes you beyond all that flying into the sun, with a blonde by your side. His performance of "Pour some sugar on me" by Def Leppard was one his best screen moments. Taking his sex appeal to new heights, here he adds another feather to his now aging cap. Pulling off the lead singer of a hairmetal band and with so much ease – hats off to the man. To add some comic relief is a pet trained monkey "Heyman" who wears suits and brings scotch! My favorite numbers apart from "Pour some sugar on me" include "Hit Me With You Best Shot" by Pat Benatar performed by Catherine Zeta-Jones and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi performed brilliantly by Tom Cruise. Catherine Zeta-Jones pulls in another solid one. The rest of the cast may have performed well but it goes unnoticed thanks to Cruise. So all in all, a nostalgic train ride for the veterans and a grand musical roller coaster ride for rock lovers.

Verdict: A brilliant 123 minute adaptation of the highly acclaimed Broadway musical of the same name- it simply “makes you wanna rock”.
