Verdict: Dhanush successfully creates magic on the screen!

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir starring one of South India’s beloved Dhanush, is an adaption of a best-selling book by Romain Puértolas titled The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe. The film may have a shorter title but it certainly does big on taking the viewer through a weave of stories across various countries that only get more interesting as the film progresses.

What’s The Extraordinary Journey of The Fakir About:

The protagonist of this film is Ajatashatru Lavesh Patel (Dhanush) fondly known as Aja, who is born into a family with little means in the slums of Mumbai. As a young boy, Aja discovers a shocking truth – he is poor. From a tender age, all he wants to do is get rich. He resorts to becoming a fakir who performs magic tricks while also tricking simple folk and wowing them with his charm and charades. Aja has but one dream – to go to Paris with his mother. However, tragedy strikes as Aja’s mother passes away. Now a determined Aja finally embarks on his extraordinary journey, with a fake passport and a fake 100 euro note. This odyssey leads Aja to meet the love of his life, Marie Rivière (Erin Moriarty) for a brief moment before life gets in the way and takes him away from her to several countries where he is forced to live a life of an immigrant.

What Works:

The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir touches upon the plight of immigrants in a light-hearted manner and yet manages to convey its message. In this film, Dhanush’s acting takes the cake with his radiant charm, brilliant acting, and witty comic timing. This movie also includes an iconic element of the Bollywood industry – an item number with Dhanush being the center of attraction. The film is humorous and keeps true audience intrigued till the end.

What Could’ve Been Better:

When the film opens, you have to get used to people from the slums of Mumbai speaking fluent English. It is quite amusing but could take some time to get used to. In this film, Marie has a best friend Rose (Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse) whose character could’ve been so much more than a girl who wants to “try and be a lesbian” because it’s a lifestyle that she finds “cool.”

Why You Should Watch:

Looking for a light and entertaining watch this weekend? The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir is perfect for you. This heartwarming rags-to-purpose story makes for a good watch and Dhanush shines on an international level.
