Baaraat Company: Film Review – You Are Cordially Invited

Verdict: A one-time watch with ample dose of love and laugh.

Wedding-themed films are not new in Bollywood. And almost every wedding-themed movie has more or less the same storyline barring a few like Band Baaja Baaraat, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Dolly Ki Doli. But still, the audience gets excited whenever a wedding movie is nearing for its release. As Baaraat Company opens today, let’s look at how different the product is from other movies.

The film is about Imu (Ranveer Kumar) who, along with his friends, continues the legacy of his grandfather by managing their family business – Baaraat Company. Now by reading this, you would be assuming that these guys are doing the same what Bittoo Sharma and Shruti Kakkar were doing in Band Baaja Baaraat. Well, Imu and team are not doing the same. What exactly they do makes this plot different from other wedding-themed movies. Imu’s life goes normally until he meets Mehak (Sandeepa Dhar). Love happens at first sight and then what follows is a fun-filled adventure ride.

Syed Ahmad Afzal, who earlier directed Youngistaan and Laal Rang, tries something different with Baaraat Company. He and his team have done extensive research in showing the grass root reality of Lucknow. The screenplay is somewhere between impressive and simple. Impressive because the realistic scenes shown very well captures the harsh side of North India in an engaging manner. Simple because in many scenes it looks like the pace of the narration has slowed down. Barring this, the film is a decent attempt by the director. The cinematographer Dhirendra Shukla deserves a special mention as his frames very aesthetically portray the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

The cast has given an earnest performance. Ranveer Kumar and Sandeepa Dhar deliver a convincing act. They are that regular couple who shares a love–hate relationship. Vishal Karwal as Abhay has very less screen time but his presence is always at a crucial point which makes him as equal as the lead. The Gangs of Wasseypur girl Anurita Jha as Yassmin is one step ahead than her previous outings. We will not be surprised if she regularly appears in more number of films.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Baaraat Company is not the usual wedding-themed film we are used to. It has its moments of love and laughter that make it a definite one-time watch.
