Director Neeraj Pandey dishes out yet another masterpiece with the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Baby’. Pandey has already gained a foothold in Bollywood with films like A Wednesday and Special 26. With Baby, he tackles an extremely sensitive topic with utmost subtlety.

Post the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, a secret unit called ‘Baby’ is born on a trial basis for five years to counteract terrorism in India. The team is headed by Feroze Ali Khan (Danny Denzongpa), and Ajay Singh Rajput (Akshay Kumar) is their most trusted officer. Across the border, mastermind Maulana Mohammad Rahman (Rasheed Naz) is planning one of the biggest attacks of all time. Can ‘Baby’ save their country from destruction? Tighten your seat belts as this action-packed thriller takes you on a roller-coaster ride.

The film goes straight to the point sans the melodrama. Brilliantly edited, the story moves at a brisk pace from one country to another (Turkey-India-Nepal-Saudi Arabia). Ajay and Co. are constantly on their toes, hunting down enemies without much ado. The death-defying stunts almost take your breath away while the background score is pulsating.

It is not just the story that makes this film work, but also a competent star cast that delivers with panache. Kay Kay Menon as Bilal does little in the film, yet is a menacing figure that evokes fear. Sushant Singh as Wasim is convincing. Taapsee Pannu as Priya is fantastic, especially in an intense fight sequence with Wasim. Rana Daggubati has little to do, but goes with the flow. Anupam Kher as the chief strategist, Shuklaji, steals the show in the second half. His camaraderie with Akshay brings back fond memories of Special 26, where they shared a similar bond.

Story, screenplay, dialogue, direction – Neeraj Pandey has excelled in every department. The film rests heavily on the plot and its actors, which probably explains the lack of hype surrounding it. Baby is by far Akshay’s best work in the action genre. You can’t help but admire his straight-face humor, and gasp as he breaks some bones without hesitation. He’s effortless, yet calculative and timed to perfection. By now, we all know what Akshay is capable of!

Why should you watch the film?

Akshay Kumar delivers a stunning, mature performance in Baby. The film is highly engrossing and sets the foundation for a thrilling climax.
