Daas Dev Film Review - BookMyShow

What is Daas Dev About:

A contemporary adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Devdas, Daas Dev has all the three major characters – Dev (Rahul Bhat), Paro (Richa Chadda) and Chandini (Aditi Rao Hydari). Sudhir Mishra not only borrows from Devdas but also from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The film’s plot is based in the political scenario in UP where a reluctant political heir – Dev (Rahul) is forced to come to his senses (quite literally) and take over the political legacy that his family has been holding onto for years. Dev, a young man who is inebriated at all times, is in love with his childhood friend Paro (Richa Chadda). When Dev is asked to take over from his very sick politician uncle Awdesh Pratap (Saurabh Shukla), Chandini (Aditi Rao) helps ‘fix’ him. But when Dev enters into the political arena he soon realizes he has stirred up a hornet’s nest which is filled with accusations of infidelity, betrayal and much worse. When realities of the past and present become too much for Dev to handle, he falls back to his old habits. Will the ‘fixer’ Chandini or his lover Paro be able to save him this time? Will Dev be able to follow the footsteps of his deceased father and uncle? Or will he slip so far away that it will be the end of a dynasty? Watch the film in your nearest theatre to know more.

What Works:

Sudhir Mishra roped in some of the best character actors like Saurabh Shukla, and Vipin Sharma for the film and they surely make the filmmaker and themselves proud of their fantastic acting prowess. Rahul Bhat as the drunk Romeo does a great job at what he is given too and so does Vineet Singh. Director Anurag Kashyap makes a special appearance in the film which is quite interesting to watch. The understanding of the political dynasty in our country explained through the plot is enlightening.

What Could’ve Been Better:

Aditi Rao’s character Chandini as the ‘other woman’ who is the ‘moorti’ of unrequited love pops up in the storyline rather erratically. The love track between the iconic trio is lost in this plot where politics takes center stage.

Why You Should Watch
