Happy Ending: Film Review – An Endearing RomCom with a Twist!

Happy Ending is a realistic yet clichéd romantic comedy, or as they call it in the movie: a ‘Romedy’. It’s safe to say that Saif Ali Khan intends to play the same role throughout his career – a womanizer who eventually meets the right girl and after a fair share of complications, they end up together. That’s right. It’s the same role he has played in Cocktail, Hum Tum, Love Aaj Kal and Dil Chahta Hai. However, in Happy Ending, Saif not only plays the role of Yudi, a brat who is afraid of commitment, but also a ‘projection’ of his own self as Yogi. Yudi is an author who once wrote a best-seller and is now struggling to get the fame and money back in his life, while Yogi is a dishevelled and mocking version of Yudi, who cautions him to tread lightly.

The film begins with Yudi explaining the age-old concept of all men being dogs. However, he bifurcates them into paaltu kutte (loyal dogs) and galli ke kutte (adulterous/ stray dogs). Ranvir Shorey, Yudi’s confidante, plays the role of the former kind of ‘dog’ and is married. The scenes between him and his wife are quite the laugh riot. Kalki Koechlin plays the role of Yudi’s overly attached girlfriend, Vishakha, who is also a dentist by profession. Although her character is intended to be annoying, it’s impossible to dislike her thanks to Kalki’s scintillating charisma. Yudi is desperately trying to end ties with her, but fails to do so despite several attempts. Meanwhile, he comes across a successful writer – Aanchal, played by the alluring Ileana D’Cruz. The way they bond and make a pact to never get attached and fall in love is thoroughly relatable in today’s times. And inevitably, that is exactly how fiery passion is kindled.
Govinda adds the commercial element to the film through his character ‘Armaan Ji’ – a film producer. He’s in search of a writer to write a ‘kickass’ script for a ‘Romedy’, and comes across Yudi. Yudi suffers from a ‘writer’s block’ and cannot seem to find inspiration. This is the point is where the story unfolds.

Why should you watch this film?

Happy Ending takes a dig at stereotypical Bollywood romantic comedies, yet keeps the ending realistic. Ileana and Saif’s chemistry is delightful and brilliant. The movie is filled with endearing scenes. Also, watch out for Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta in cameo roles! If you wish to walk out of the cinema with a smile on your face, Happy Ending should be on your ‘to-watch list’ for the weekend.
