As the name suggests, Hate Story 2 is a tale of hatred and vengeance.

The film tells the story of Sonica Prasad (Surveen Chawla), a young woman in an unfavorable situation. Indebted to Mandar Mhatre (Sushant Singh), she is reduced to being his mistress against her will. However, things take a turn for the worse when she falls in love with Akshay Bedi (Jay Bhanushali). Mandar tells her to stay away from Akshay, threatening to kill both of them if she doesn’t. When the lovers run away together, he kills them both. Miraculously, Sonica survives and sets out to avenge Akshay’s death.

Sushant Singh is loathsome as the rogue politician Mandar Mhatre. Though it would’ve been easy for his character to become something of a caricature, the actor nicely maintains a balance between being realistic and being deplorable. His performance is the highlight of the film. Leading lady Surveen Chawla is also notable as the young woman seeking vengeance. Though her acting is far from stellar, she brings a charm and likeability to the character that makes you root for her. Though he only makes a brief appearance, Jay Bhanushali also perfectly portrays the lovestruck young man.

Though the actors do their best, their performances are bogged down by a generic and slightly mediocre script. Notwithstanding all its twists and turns, Hate Story 2 is far from original or unusual. It’s a plot we’ve all seen on the silver screen before. However, the same story is told in a riveting fashion that makes it worth watching.

The film’s soundtrack and background score, on the other hand, are stellar. Apart from an unnecessary item song, the soundtrack compliments the visuals without ever distracting us from the story.

It’s hard to put a finger on what exactly is wrong with Hate Story 2. The film is entertaining, but it is way too reminiscent of other (arguably, better) thrillers. Moreover, it is far from the erotic thriller the trailers make it seem like. But it is a compelling film that will keep your eyes glued to the screen.

Why should you watch this film?
Hate Story 2 is not the best thriller you’ve ever watched, or even the best thriller you’ve watched this year. However, it’s entertaining and manages to tell a mediocre story in a surprisingly engaging way. Watch it if you’re looking to enjoy a thriller, but don’t let your expectations soar too high.
