We all love a good horror film. The sense of dread, elements of surprise and haunting soundtrack which keeps you hooked on to the film. Sadly, Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai failed to garner that attention.

Using a tried and tested formula, Debaloy Dey’s Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai traces the story of a  happily married couple – Ayesha and Uday Saxena. The family shifts to Jabalpur after Uday gets a new job.

New Job. New home. And since, everything is going on so well we need some spooks to spark up things. So voilà! Very soon, ‘bizarre’ things starts to happen – doors shut by themselves and things fall and fly randomly, defying gravity. Ayesha feels the supernatural presence. The evil spirit takes control of her and things gets worse, for the family, and also for the audience.

Swara Bhaskar and Deepraj Rana are perhaps the only good factors in the movie. Swara as Ayesha gives an honest performance. Her expressions of fear and anxiousness are laudable. Deepraj Rana as the exorcist, even though not engaging, tries his best.

The problem with Indian horror films is their lack of originality. We don’t want to watch the heavily-powdered ghosts anymore. Honestly, they aren’t scary. The colored lenses are also not helping.

Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai attempts to create something terrorizing but it doesn’t really make any impact on us. It’s the same old feeling. The special effects aren’t impressive. The switch between scenes is rough and abrupt. Also in the later part of the film, the dialogues are just too loud.

Why should you watch this film?
Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai promises a lot and delivers very little. If you love cheap thrills over a weekend, Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai makes for a perfect watch. The film has got an interesting ending, perhaps you will like it.

PS: There’s a sequel coming soon. Be prepared.
