Verdict: This Anurag Kashyap film is more entertaining than dark.

Anurag Kashyap has his own style of storytelling, with the main ingredient being realism. He perfectly manages to bring in the local dialect and culture in his movies, making it all the more relatable and a treat for cinema lovers. Mukkabaaz is another addition to his list of movies that deliver an entertaining, engaging, and electrifying experience.

What's Mukkabaaz About:

Mukkabaaz revolves around Shravan Kumar Singh (Vineet Kumar Singh), a self-acknowledged failure and yet, the best boxer in town. He has been trying his luck at boxing but can't make it to the district matches, courtesy of Bhagwan Das Mishra (Jimmy Shergill) – the local bahubali with haunting red eyes. Shravan falls in love with Mishra's niece, Sunaina (Zoya Hussain) – a mute girl. Their love story is a bumpy ride from the very first day. Bhagwan Das Mishra wants to marry his niece to a rich businessman, who in return, would sponsor the boxing tournaments, but Shravan is a hard nut to crack.

What Works:

The movie makes for an engaging affair throughout its duration of two-and-a-half hours. Every scene keeps you hooked on to what's coming next. The script is progressive and never makes for a boring moment. As is the specialty of Kashyap, the characters are brutal and true to their selves. The local flavor of Bareilly is apparent in everyone's dialect, songs, and directorial references. The music escalates every moment. The overall execution of the film is simply flawless.
All the actors have given a powerful performance, be it Vineet as Shravan, Zoya as Sunaina, or Jimmy as Bhagwan. With a peculiarity in each character, every actor – lead or supporting – make a memorable impact on the viewer, be it Zoya's helpless mother, Shravan's disappointed father, or Ravi Kishan as one of the few good coaches in the system. Even after being mute, Sunaina managed to express well. Like always, the casting is spot-on in this Kashyap film.

What Could Have Been Better:

The film's title is Mukkabaaz, however, you don't get to see as much boxing as you'd expect. The film is more of a twisted love story than a sports drama.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

If you are an Anurag Kashyap fan, then this movie is another gem for you to cherish. It is his first full-fledged love story and it is indeed amazing. The movie has some great performers and Zoya Hussain is another great discovery by Kashyap. We would recommend you ditch every plan this weekend and watch this movie.
