Verdict- It’s basic and cliched, but it still works.

The Tamil movie O Kadhal Kanmani was a film that marked the comeback of sorts of ace director Mani Ratnam. It became an instant hit, thanks to its modern take on relationships, its music, and the unforgettable chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. When we learned that the film was to be remade in Hindi with Bollywood sweethearts Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor and director Shaad Ali controlling the reins, OK Jaanu already had our attention.

Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a gaming programmer who will soon be off to the US to accomplish his dream. Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) is an architect who will soon be on her way to Paris to study architecture. The two meet at a common friend’s wedding and instantly hit it off with two things in common. One is that they both do not believe in the institution of marriage and two, they have big aspirations for their careers. On the other spectrum, we have Ganpathy Uncle (Naseeruddin Shah) a retired judge and Bhavani Aunty (Leela Samson), a famous Carnatic musician of her time, now suffering from the early stage of Alzheimer's. Adi is living with the elderly couple and after much persuasion, a reluctant Ganapathy Uncle gives them his permission to start living in together. Like every no-strings relationships, things soon start taking a serious turn as the day for the two to go their respective ways gets closer, bringing us to a question asked too many times with no definitive answer: Can one have both – love and a successful career?

Ok Jaanu: Film Review - Aditya & Shraddha Rekindle the Romance

As far as a remake of the Tamil flick, Ok Jaanu does not experiment much and has played it safe by sticking to the original, scene-by-scene and word-by-word. As for the music, A.R. Rahman’s tunes leave no room for error and has us swooning. What works best and maybe the only thing that works for this remake is the impeccable chemistry between the two leads. Had it been any other pair of actors doing the film, things probably wouldn’t have worked as good as they did. The film starts on a slow note and might not pique much interest but soon picks up the pace. For people who've watched the original, they might find the film be a good attempt to remake the original. For people who’ve not seen the original, the film is not the best of love stories out there but the leads make it worth the watch.

Why You Should Watch The Movie:

With its modern take on relationships, a realistic and relatable storyline, Ok Jaanu is a film almost all young adults will relate to. The chemistry between Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor is what brings this film to life and makes it a fun weekend watch.
