Review: Through their lifetime every mortal questions the existence of God as well as the faith imbibed in the minds of most believers in the name of religion. Simultaneously, a rational thinking man may also argue that if God exists, then why is there a religious divide and disparity amongst His followers. And then there is a third kind, the ones who do not believe in the existence of the divine powers and instead question everyone who does. Kanji Bhai Mehta played by Paresh Rawal, is one such man until the day his perfect world comes crashing down. OMG Oh My God, is one of the few intelligently inspired films, first from an Australian film called, The Man Who Sued God and then the play starring Paresh Rawal in the lead role, Kishen vs Kanhaiya which runs to packed houses every time it comes to town.

What began as an elaboration of the snippets seen in the official trailer, culminated into a well-made film by Umesh Shukla, who also happens to be the director of the play on which the film is based. Most of all, there are very few theatrical moments you will come across, all performances are quite fresh and seem completely uninspired from the play. One can safely deduce that this film shall become a benchmark for sourcing and adaptations.

Paresh Rawal is an impeccable performer, a fact that everyone is well-aware of. More than three decades old in the industry and numerous films later, he is one of the most bankable stars for a film. Everytime you watch a re-run of Andaz Apna Apna or Hera Pheri, it is Paresh Rawal you will first notice. For obvious reasons, they are not easily forgettable roles. The best part, he is a multi-faceted actor – from theatre to films trying different genres. Any avid movie-goer is bound to be awestruck. Sharing screenspace are seasoned actors like Mithun Chakraborty, in a never-seen-before role, Govind Namdeo and Akshay Kumar to name a few.

The film co-produced by Swaroop Sampat and Akshay Kumar will draw audiences to the theatres over the long weekend for more than one reasons. There’s witty humour, drama and the awesome chemistry that Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar share. It felt a lot like Hera Pherirevisited. Besides, Akshay Kumar in his cameo role plays the part with panache. A new age Krishna who rides a heavy bike and swirls a peacock-feather shaped keychain as the Sudarshan Chakra. Very impressive indeed. And brownie points for the thought that went behind this. The film’s script is simple. There are conversations between God and man, just as they are between friends. Moral lessons are learnt in a casual, light-hearted manner. A fleeting moment may take you back to the time you first read the Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna shares his pearls of wisdom with the young Pandava, Arjuna torn between family and duty.

The writers, Bhavesh Mandalia and Umesh Shukla have woven a crisp script that keeps you engrossed throughout the film. Especially the courtroom scenes, well-thought out and executed will not bore you at all, through the use of witty one-liners and remarkable performances.

Lastly to mention, the ‘item number’ by Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha, any praise is too little for the master dancer-turned-director with Sonakshi Sinha trying hard to match up to his steps. The song on the whole is a very peppy number and will surely make you want to tap your feet every time you hear the song on your respective music systems.

One point has been established through this film, Paresh Rawal is one of the most bankable actors and it is not a very difficult task for him to carry an entire film on his shoulders. Be prepared to be bowled over!

Verdict: Witty and enjoyable. The film has been very intelligently made. Another feather in Paresh Rawal’s hat.
