One Day: Film Review – A Thrilling Vigilante Act

Verdict: One Day: Justice Delivered makes for a thrilling one-time watch.

Directed by Ashok Nanda, One Day is a crime thriller with Anupam Kher and Esha Gupta in the lead and Kumud Mishra, Zarina Wahab, Ananth Mahadevan and others in the supporting cast.

What’s One Day About:

This race-against-time crime thriller revolves around two main characters – a retired judge Justice Tyagi (Anupam Kher) and a tough-as-nails Haryanvi Crime Branch police officer Laxmi Rathi (Esha Gupta), supported by a junior police officer Sharma (played by the superbly talented Kumud Mishra). Justice Tyagi has retired from his services but is still reeling about the injustice of his old cases. He remembers every case where he had to acquit the accused due to lack of evidence or witnesses and he resents these powerful criminals who resort to immoral activities to get away scot-free. Tyagi decides to impart justice by playing a vigilante who kidnaps and tortures the accused into confessing their crimes. The list of abducted people includes important members of society like a doctor couple, a hotel owner, etc. Now Laxmi, along with PI Sharma, has to solve these missing persons cases and stop the perpetrator but Justice Tyagi is neither careless nor should be taken lightly.

What Works:

One Day: Justice Delivered gets the vibe of a thriller just right. The second half is especially exciting and goes at a smoother pace than its first counterpart while keeping the audience hooked. Anupam Kher delivers a knockout performance with the script he was handed. His vigilante act is convincing, even though it is hard to imagine a mild-mannered Kher physically torturing criminals. Esha Gupta does her best in the de-glam cop act. While the music is not unforgettable, the film’s plot progresses in the songs, which maintains the pace of the film. Overall, One Day makes for a thrilling one-time weekend watch.

What Could’ve Been Better:

While it is entertaining, the plot of the story is not groundbreaking. The item numbers do not seem to fit into the serious tone of the narrative. Esha Gupta’s Haryanvi accent is not at its best.

Why You Should Watch:

One Day: Justice Delivered has its heart in the right place and Anupam Kher makes the whole affair intriguing. The thrills are worth a watch over the rainy weekend.
