Verdict: An inspiring tale for the ones crazy enough to try and bring a change.
After telling us the importance of a toilet, Akshay Kumar is back with another movie with a subject that is shushed away in most households. Inspired by one of the stories of producer Twinkle Khanna's book, The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad, the movie captures the life, struggle and success of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the Pad Man of India.
What's Pad Man About:
Based on a true story, Pad Man revolves around Lakshmikant Chauhan (Akshay Kumar) who is newly married and is willing to do everything to keep his wife Gayatri (Radhika Apte) happy. He keeps innovating things for her convenience. One day he finds out that Gayatri is using a dirty cloth during her menstruation and gets worried about her health. He gets her a pack of sanitary pads. Gayatri, initially happy, asks him to return the pack because it was too expensive. Still worried, Lakshmi tries his hand at making the napkins himself but it doesn't turn out as effective as expected. On the other hand, a man taking interest in women issues ensues a lot of negativity in the neighborhood. Lakshmi is ridiculed for his acts and taking interest in matters that don't concern him. Worried about the society, everyone in the family part ways with him, including Gayatri. After losing everything, Lakshmi goes on a journey with a hope that everyone will understand him one day.
The movie is based on a story of true success. It has everything that a good watch requires – entertainment, good execution, a social message and drama. Akshay Kumar has carved a niche for himself with films that can be categorized under good cinema and this one is another entry to the list. He is a brilliant actor and it shows in every character he portrays. Lakshmi is a man who thinks out of the box and loves with childlike innocence. The character is a complex one and Akshay Kumar has portrayed it brilliantly. Radhika Apte plays the character of Gayatri with ease and Sonam Kapoor brings the light in the movie. The movie scores good marks in performances.
While the story was great in the first place, it is the execution that matters the most and this one entertains you and educates you simultaneously. It has been thought and shot well. The songs in the background are placed properly and are highly responsible for the mood of the movie. The movie has its moments and you feel for the characters. There are ups and downs that keep you interested in the movie throughout the movie.
What Could Have Been Better:
There are a couple of speeches in the movie which go a little longer than expected. But what is being said is what makes the movie's message clearer and they are indeed much required in the movie.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
It is a movie both with an intent and an inspiration for the minds who are crazy enough to innovate against all odds. It is a social message to those who are unaware of the fact that women bleed and it's completely natural.
